excellent value, but ignore the item photo November 13, 2007 workingbird (Vermont, USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
The SportRack A90095 Explorer Box is a big, dry, useful box on the roof of my van. It would not surprise me, however if I am the only person to have bought one through Amazon, as the article pictured is a small piece of mounting hardware, and not the 4' x 5' x 1.5' ABS box it is in fact. Search elsewhere on the internet for an accurate image. That said, it was still a big pain to assemble all the parts. Don't attempt the job when you're in a hurry, tired, or otherwise impaired.
Worked famously at a fraction of the cost. August 30, 2008 R. Wagner 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
We needed some extra room for our luggage & souvenirs on the family vacation and didn't want to blow a fortune on a rooftop carrier we would probably use only 2x a year. This was the best deal I could find anywhere online for a large carrier (most were smaller and more expensive). I was leery of the low price that it wouldn't be of high quality but the product arrived quickly, all the pieces were included, and we barely knew it was on top of the Explorer on the drive - no wind noise like the vinyl zip-up carrier we took last year - plus, because it was hard and it locked, I wasn't paranoid about leaving it on top of the roof when we stayed at a hotel halfway through our trip. It miraculously never rained on our whole vacation so Im not sure how waterproof it is while driving, but there was some thick weatherstripping foam tape included that appeared to seal out the elements pretty well. You will need 2 people to assemble it - as one must get inside at one point to secure one side of the bolt while the other person tightens - but overall it was an excellent and easy way to add a ton of space to our SUV and make our trip more enjoyable and stress-free.
Love It September 21, 2008 gene (Climax NC USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
It was easy to put together took about 1hr. by myself. You may need to put 2 are 3 pic oak 1x2 slats on the bottom to help reinforce the bottom to make it more stable. Overall, if you need lots of extra cargo space in your car are suv, this is definitely a good choice. We went on a trip and it rained the whole time when we got to our destination I opened up the cargo box and there was not a drop of water inside.
Great Item If You Need Lots of Room August 6, 2008 JR (USA) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought my carrier from Sears and looks exactly like the item shown. I have a large family and wanted to buy the largest roof top carrier and this was biggest I could find. Here are my opinions of the carrier: 1. Assembly and installation on top of my Expedition took about one hour. I never used the U-Bolt mounting hardware before so it took awhile for me to understand how it work and how best to install it on top of my truck without scratching the paint. To complicate things, I ended up installing the carrier by myself, so balancing the carrier over my head to put on the roof was tricky, but do-able. Adjusting my roof rack rails also took up some of that time to get it just right. You have to decide if you want the carrier toward the front or rear of the roof top. I chose to put it towards the front where I could step on the folded middle passenger seats as a step ladder and where it is more centered on my car. 2. This carrier is all plastic except for the metal hinges and locks. The bed of the carrier has long rectangular indentations to give the plastic more strength. But I still worried that under high summer heat, the roof of my car can easily go beyond 100F to the touch and a fully loaded carrier could sag, bend and distort the bottom bed of the carrier. However, a 1x2 wooden slat fits perfectly in the indentations and would prevent any sagging. From Home Depot, I got oak 1x2 slats which is much stronger and stiffer than the usual pine or soft wood 1x2 slats. In retrospect, I am very happy I spent the extra money for oak because it never sagged no matter how heavy and hot the carrier got. 3. The lid when being opened feels very flimsy until you lock it into the open position. However, when the lid is closed and locked down with the various built in latches and locks, the unit becomes very rigid and can withstand nearly any speed you will drive your car. I drove 80 mph and the roof carrier was very stable and not vibrating or causing any strange noise. There is a little more wind noise (not noticeable unless you really try to hear for it). If you listen to the radio or CD, you will not notice the increased noise. 4. This carrier is very spacious. I was able to store four 21" and two 23" carry on luggage and a small/medium sized duffle bag. All were stuffed to the gills. I estimated the total weight on the roof was close to 160 lbs. I believe the oak slats made the carrier stiff enough to handle the weight. 5. You need lots of room in your garage to store this carrier. It obviously does not fold or collapse into a smaller package. Overall, if you need lots of extra cargo space in your car, this is definately a good choice.
Quick Ship, Excellent Product September 2, 2008 John G. Hodge (Roanoke, VA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We received the SportRack very quickly after ordering it and used it the very next weekend. It worked out great. The test was to see how it would ride out through a major storm. On our vacation trip to the beach it poured down rain so hard in fact that we had the wipers going at full speed. There were cars pulled over to weather out the storm but we kept on going. When we got to our destination I opened up the cargo box and there was not a drop of water inside. I was extremely grateful. I'd recommend this product to anyone. I did a lot of research on cargo boxes and found that most were very expensive and did not offer much room. With three young kids I was able to put the stroller, a pack and play, beach toys, tool bag, and many other odds and ends that eat up room. For the price and size this is an excellent deal.
