Easy to set up, make sure to upgrade firmware July 14, 2008 Simcha 34 out of 37 found this review helpful
I replaced an existing wired router/wireless access point combination with the WRT610N. The replacement was painless, taking about a half hour, including retyping all of my DHCP reservation and port forwarding information. The only glitch was that running the Linksys EasyLink Advisor (a tool that among other things, shows you everything connected to your router) reset the router. This is fixed in the latest firmware (level 17, my router shipped with 16). Speeds have been good. I only have one machine that is connected with Draft-N, and it has been able to connect about 4-5 times faster than my Wireless-G connections on the 5Mhz band. My Wireless-G connections have had consistently better quality than through my old WEP54G Access Point.

Linksys did a great job with this product. It is sleek and stylish, while still providing high levels of connectivity within my three story home. I have it installed near the ceiling of my basement. I am using the 5ghZ "N" band for my PS3 only at this time. The PS3 is connected via ethernet to the Linksys Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming Adapter. The rest of my computers (PCs, iPhone, and Macs) use the 2.4 ghZ "B-G Mixed" band. Both networks share the same DHCP pool, but have different SSIDs and passphrases (a Linksys recommendation). The first thing I did was update the firmware. I have not experienced any dropouts or heat issues. UPDATE: After a few weeks of use and after adding more wireless devices to my network, I have more to say...and its not so rosy. Both my Lenovo T61 and Apple Macbook Pro have issues when I tried setting the 2.4ghz network to "Mixed" (B, G, and N). When one computer is working fine, the other seems to have issues connecting to the network, usually the T61. I had security set to WPA 2 Tkip or AES (since this router allows this "either or" setting). I have since changed WPA TKIP based ona recommendation I found on the Linksys forums. It has only marginally improved things. The bizarre part about this is the T61. It works fine over the 5GHz N setup, giving me 130Mbps. On 2.4 ghz I had to switch to "B-G Mixed and enable SSID broadcasting to get a connection initially. After that I could re-disable SSID broadcasting. So, for my house I have the following: PS3 on 5Ghz N. No connectivity issues with the Linksys Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming Adapter. 100% uptime. I also have an iPhone ("B/G" speeds), Appletv (Supports B/G/N), Macbook Pro (Airport "G" card), Buffalo Wireless Extender ("G"), and PowerMac (Airport "B" card). Since my iTunes library is on the Macbook Pro, I had to run the appletv over my 2.4 ghz network for the Appletv to see it. I was hoping that since both networks share the same address pool, that devices on the 2.4ghz network could see those on the 5Ghz N network. I expected bridging between the two wireless bands because they are in the same device. Maybe I am doing something wrong. If so, please comment on your setup.
Great Upgrade from Airport Extreme (300 mbs) August 3, 2008 Dustin G. Hess (Charleston, IL) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
Ok, First of all, I just want to say that I am a senior in network administration, and I have been though my fair share of routers. I recently had an airport extreme and loved it, but I found myself in need to two separate radio bands. One work review: Fandamtastic If you have ever configured a Linksys router, nothing from what you loved has changed(192.168.1.1 password:admin). Obviously, there are a couple of extra tabs and a few more setting in the wireless tab, but it's still the same old game. Make sure if you want true wireless N you read the little help tidbits on the side in the wireless pane. Set everything to wide 40mhz for true 300mbs speed, and leave it at auto 20mhz for backwards compatibility. I had a small increase in range from my Airport Extreme and a huge increase over any of my old WRT54G's. I haven't tried using the usb port for NAS or UPnP yet (I have a dedicated computer for this) Pro: Wireless speeds are amazingly fast, just as I expected The wired speeds are of course fantastic The router looks sexy as hell The power plug goes into a transformer and then has about another 12 inches of a normal power cord so that it doesn't take up more than one plug. Very thoughtful Con: The button on the front doesn't do anything on my unit All in all I love it.
Worth Every Cent August 31, 2008 M. Blackstone (Tustin, CA United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Pros: A worthy upgrade from a G router. Very feature rich and if you know what you are doing, fairly easy to setup though I did struggle with getting the 5.0 band to deliver N at full speed (I used WPA2-AES). Im running it on N wireless and the speed is great. It also does a good job of downshifting / upshifting as the signal changes through the house. Cons: LELA is not good. Don't even think about using it. If you can't configure this manually, find someone who can. Other Thoughts: Keep in mind this is a 1.0 release right now, so if you are not willing to suffer through a few bumps in the road, a more mature product may be for you. Be sure to upgrade the firmware when you get it!
Finally a Linksys USB Router that works as advertised August 15, 2008 Hasnain Malik (NJ, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am currently using wrt350n with dd-wrt as the default firmware is pure crap. When WRT600N was introduced I tested and immediately returned it as the media server portion of the firmware was still the same mess as WRT350N. With this router Linksys incorporated Twonky Media Server (Currently 4.4) in their firmware. I am not sure whether the previous media srever was the same but this version really works. I am using a 750GB external hard disk in a windows xp environment without any issues. From a PS3 the media server does not work, but I think that's a known issue with that version of twonky and PS3 and for that you need a later version of twonky installed like 5.x that is still in beta. However as its integrated in router you will have to wait for it to come in a new firmware for the device. So if you stream through PS3 you are out of luck. The USB transfer speed from the network is still very slow. The router piece works fine. I have seen no disconnects. I have only g-based clients so cannot comment on disconnects that the others reported based on n-clients.
