Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
Logitech is touting an advancement in comfort and usability design with its ergonomic, cross-platform Cordless Wave keyboard. There might be some marketing hyperbole to this claim, but after a week of typing with the Wave, I'm not sure that I could live without it. (This Cordless Desktop Wave also includes the ambidextrous LX8 scroller laser mouse.)

Like other ergonomic keyboards, the Wave includes an elevated palm rest, though not as extreme as the platforms of old. It's also covered in a lightly padded vinyl upholstery that feels soft yet firm under the wrist, as well as a Goldilocks amount of tackiness (i.e., not too slippery, not sticky, just right). The keys are also positioned in a gentle U-shaped arc that nearly escapes the eye, but is apparent once you set your wrists down and start typing.

Contoured, wave-shaped key design conforms naturally to your fingers.
But the biggest design innovation that the Wave introduces comes from its name--the keys undulate across the board in a wave-shaped contour that mimics the changing lengths in your own digits. The keys are at their highest on the outside at the A and Enter keys (which, if you're a touch typist, is where your little fingers are positioned), and the keys trough to their lowest point at D and K (where the longer middle finger resides) before rising slightly at the G and H keys. The keys have a maximum distance variation of 4mm, and the spacebar mimics the wave contour of the keyboard design.

As someone who writes for a living, my computer keyboard is one of the most important tools I have and one that I'm connected to for hours every day. I've gone through many models over the years to get just the right one, and I currently use the Matias Tactile Pro on my Mac as it provides some of the best keystroke feedback I've found (which is the polar opposite to the frustratingly squishy keyboards that came with my HP and Apple PCs).

While the rolling contour of the keyboard layout was barely perceptible, my fingertips took to the Wave easily. It felt like each key was indeed designed specifically to fit the finger that was mapped to tap it. And the keys combine a springy action with a final tap that's not too loud, but both tactile and audible enough for instant feedback. As my week of testing progressed and my fingers grew more accustomed to the Wave, I actually felt as if my typing was both more accurate than on the Tactile Pro as well as a touch faster.

From an ergonomic standpoint, the Wave's gradual curve isn't immediately noticeable, but after a few days I found my elbows weren't hunched next to my body as they were with the straight keyboard, freeing both wrists and shoulders from strain. That said, if you require more substantial ergonomics for your typing (such as the curve and height of the Microsoft Natural), you might be disappointed by the relative flatness of the Wave.

The Delete key has been elongated and the Insert/Help key moved above..
The Wave has a fairly standard extended keyboard design, with one change that I cheered but could easily be jeered by others. The Home/Delete/End/Page Up & Down keys is switched to a vertical orientation, and the bane of my typing life--the Insert key (also the Help key on the Mac), which I often hit mistakenly when hunting for the Delete key--has been moved up (moving into the Scroll Lock key position) and replaced by an elongated Delete key. Another handy feature is onscreen notification of when you hit the Caps Lock key (another one of my touch typing transgressions).

The keyboard is supplemented by a plethora of system-specific feature buttons--including Flip 3D, Gadgets and Media Center in Windows Vista (aka, Expose, Dashboard, and Front Row on the Mac)--as well as quick access to your selected audio program and full playback controls (including volume). All functions can be customized using the included Logitech Setpoint utility (or Control Center within the Mac's System Preferences).

The Desktop Wave package is completed with the inclusion of the symmetrically designed LX8 laser scroller mouse, which can be used by either righties or lefties. The comfortably curved sides are supplemented by a rubbery finish that's easily gripped. It's more compact than the Microsoft Intellimouse we've been using, though just a bit heftier. That said, it glided easily over our desk's surface and was very precise once we configured the tracking speed. Both mouse and keyboard connect to your PC via a wireless USB dongle that looks like a flash thumbdrive. Its small size makes it easy to pack along with the mouse for work while on the go, and it also comes with a dock for desktop use. Both mouse and keyboard are powered by two AA batteries.

When I began reviewing the Cordless Wave, I wasn't looking for a new keyboard. But thanks to its excellent typing action, unique comfort features--from the contoured design of the keys to the padded wrist rest--and the plethora of customizable functions right at the tip of the finger, it's time to part ways with my old keyboard. --Agen G.N. Schmitz

Pros:

  • Innovative contoured design of the keys conform naturally to your finger lengths, excellent typing action
  • Padded vinyl wrist rest adds soft comfort and allows easy movement
  • Loads of function and multimedia buttons, all customizable using included software
  • Cross-platform, including compatibility with special features in Windows Vista
  • Laser mouse is symmetrically designed, for use by both righties and lefties
Cons:
  • Shifting of some keys might annoy some, but delight others
  • Might seem flat to those who need more substantial ergnomics

5 out of 5 stars Without A Doubt, The Best Keyboard I Have Ever Used   October 2, 2007

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3QQT3IEB7V2AY I can say with all fairness, this is the best keyboard and mouse combination set I have ever used. The unique wave design of the keyboard helps to keep your hands and arms positioned correctly, while the mouse has just enough weight to give it a substantial, firm feel.

If you are like me, the old ergonomic keyboards of the past just didn't work for you -- they were too awkward to get used to and weren't all that comfortable. With the Logitech Wave, they've addressed those concerns in making a keyboard that is easy to use and comfortable for long periods of typing.

In this video review I walk you through the product set and talk about some of the features I like about the Logitech Cordless Desktop Wave set as well as some of the things you should watch out for when purchasing any wireless desktop combination.

5 out of 5 stars Great Keyboard, User-friendly layout for typing   September 27, 2007

This works right out of the box, batteries were included, and I did not need to install any software. All of the keyboards I have used over the years were the normal, straight-key design. Until I tired this keyboard I had no idea how much stress I was placing on my wrist while typing for hours. I enjoy the natural feel of my hand position while using the Wave Set keyboard. The larger keys are much appreciated, as is the oversized delete key. No more hitting the Insert key by mistake while you are in fast type mode.

The keyboard is very comfortable to use but it is a little larger than a standard keyboard, but it does protect your wrist from fatigue. But if you have limited desk space you may need to take that into consideration. I prefer the comfort to the small amount extra desk space you lose. I feel like I am typing on an electric typewriter instead of a standard keyboard; for me that is a plus. It has increased my words-per minute. And I like that you are able to customize the F-keys on the board. This may not be a big deal but I love the convenient one-touch controls for volume and media playback. There are other buttons for photo gallery and more, but I use the volume control the most so it has come to the forefront of my attention.

The mouse that comes with the keyboard is ok. But I miss the functionality and comfort of my old Logitech mouse, and it is only a MX-700. I just got used to the many extra functions the other mouse can do. But if you have small hands you may love the mouse that comes with the set. Plus the mouse has a button control on either side of the mouse. It seems my left-handed friend loves the mouse that comes in this set.

I would have preferred a different mouse, but the lowest rating I would have given the set is 4 stars; the keyboard is five stars, so overall I had to rate it a 5. Note: I have never used a split comfort board and I am running Windows XP Pro. So with that in mind I can say that I can highly recommend this keyboard.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Keyboard Mouse combo that I have ever used!   September 28, 2007

theme for the Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse combo....easy. Logitech has made it asy to install, easy to use, and easy on the ears (it is very quiet).

Here is a break down of my likes and dislikes

Likes-

_ I mentioned that I was able to set this thing up in under one minute. Logitech has made it absolutely, amazingly easy to install.
- Typing on the keyboard is almost completely silent. Logitech has incorporated some sort of sound dampening in the buttons to help reduce the "Click, Click" sounds you are accustomed to. I may be on the weird side, but this is a huge plus in my book. I love the lack of sound and how the keys feel "soft" under your fingertips.
- The design helps to reduce the number of typos. It is hard to explain but the keys are in a "Wave" pattern that helps my clumsy fingers from pressing the wrong key.
- Great Product packaging that includes 4 Duracell batteries.
- Plenty of range on the keyboard and mouse.
- The extra functionality of the keyboard will come in handy for use with Windows users (more on Macs a little later).
- Wrist padding built into the keyboard - ergonomics professionals are going to love this design!

My dislikes are few and a bit on the picky side but here goes

Dislikes-

- The "back keyboard legs" are a little to high for my preference (although ergonomic professionals would prefer that they didn't exist at all). I simply keep the legs up and lay the keyboard flat against the table.
- Not all of the functionality keys work with Macs. While I am able to use the volume keys I am not able to use any of the "silver" keys (for pictures, zooming, automatic calculator and such). Not too big of the deal you expect these things when you choose to purchase a Mac... most software and hardware providers design for use wit Windows. Not a major problem.
- The USB transmitter is a bit flimsy. No problems yet, but I could see it becoming accidentally dislodged.
- No lights to indicate if the number lock or caps locks buttons have been pressed.

As a whole - I may end up buying two more! One for our home, one for my office and one for my wife! This friend is probably the biggest compliment that I can give it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent quality at a low price, but is it right for you?   September 22, 2007

I installed this product on my Vista PC with a minimum of fuss. I had to give permission for the installation procedure to access the Internet and I had to download one driver. Everything worked as it should, first time. The keyboard is lighter and flatter than I expected - I thought it was going to have one of those bulky rests for the wrists, but fortunately not. I particularly like the scroll wheel on the mouse, which allows you to move left and right over a document by tilting the wheel left and right. Because the novel features of the keyboard and mouse are ergonomic as much as functional, they may or may not be right for you. The unorthodox key layout will upset some people and delight others. The Home and End keys are aligned horizontally rather than vertically, which makes sense when you consider that they are most often used to go to the beginning and end of lines. The delete key is extra large, on the basis that it is frequently used. If you habitually use several different keyboards and like the keys to be always where you expect them to be, you may be irritated by these innovations. The keys are very quiet, but with a slightly spongy feel. To know if this is right for you, you need to think about how you work. For instance, if you want a cordless keyboard so you can sit on a sofa some distance from a large screen in a games room or whatever, wouldn't you need a trackball rather than a separate mouse? Also, are you so pushed for space that you won't want this larger than usual keyboard? Personally, I love it. Being free of those cords has made life a lot easier. This is not, in all honesty, a product that you really need - it is something that you might love to have. This product screams quality, from the packaging (Logitech pack their stuff well enough to withstand cataclysmic disasters, and attractively enough to make it feel like Christmas when you open it) through installation, to use. And the price is good. Your upgrade path should be: Wait until you need a new PC, then buy one with Vista already installed (upgrading is a pain), then add this keyboard and mouse to your Amazon Wish List, a few weeks before Christmas, and start dropping hints.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent package with well thought out details   September 26, 2007

To give the Logitech Cordless Desktop Wave keyboard and mouse a real workout, I've set them up at my office. From box to completely set up and functioning took less than ten minutes, including loading the Logitech SetPoint software.

The keyboard does appear to have an actual wave down the middle. Having used flat, regulation keyboards all my life with no problem, the slope in this keyboard looked very strange at first. I was skeptical about the "wave" design, but they're right. It's not just a gimmick; the slight rise in the keys does making typing more comfortable. The keyboard wave starts to rise gently around the 5, crests at 6, and recedes at about 7 (QWERTY). The keyboard has a two and a half inch rubberized border along the lower edge which serves as a convenient place to rest your wrists. The keys themselves are large, curved for good finger placement, and clearly marked with white labels.

The upper edge and left side of the keyboard contain the hot keys. There is one stroke access to Explorer (you can specify the home page), My Pictures, My Music, Media Center, Calculator, Document Flip, Zoom In/Out, and Sleep. If you don't like the default settings, you can easily customize them for your own needs. The function keys give you two stroke access to Word, Excel, Calendar, Explorer, MS Messenger, Email application, Yahoo Livewords, Battery Status, CD Eject, and three keys available to personalize. There is a Media Center control panel in the upper center of the keyboard that includes single key forward, back, play/pause, volume up/down, and mute.

The mouse is large (4.5 x 2.5 x 1.75), but well designed to feel comfortable in the hand. The sides are rubberized for an easy grip. The mouse has the standard left and right click keys; the scroll wheel also functions as a Document Flip fast key button; extra keys on the left and right side of the mouse can be used for forward and back, left and right click, or left and right scroll. Mouse keys can be used with default settings, but are also customizable. A special tab section in the SetPoint software allows you to customize the mouse for Game Mode Settings, too.

The receiver is slim and protrudes only about two inches from the USB port when installed. Both keyboard and mouse have red "connect" buttons on the underside. The bottom of the mouse also has an on/off button and a green status light.

My computer is running Windows XP, while I understand the Wave keyboard and mouse are even more feature rich for Vista users, I was delighted with the array of options available for XP users. The software is intuitive and easy to use. You don't have to be an Electrical Engineer to figure out how to customize your settings.

The keyboard and mouse are very attractive - black with subtle metallic blue/gray accents. Both keyboard and mouse use two standard AA batteries (furnished). The battery life is estimated at six months.

The Wave set are comfortable, easy to use, easy to set up, conveniently cord free, and look nice on the desk. Highly recommended!
