Amazon.com Product Description Silent Hill: Homecoming marks the debut of the renowned psychological horror series on next-generation consoles. Building upon the series' trademark foundations of atmosphere, adventure and storytelling, it introduces a frightening new and standalone gameplay experience destined to haunt the dreams of both first-time players and those with some experience wandering the famously fog-shrouded streets of the town of Silent Hill and its new sinister sister city Shepherd's Glen. Survive Shepherd's nightmare | Explore Silent Hill as Alex Shepherd. View larger. | Battle frightening enemies. View larger. | And the unexpectedly frightening. View larger. | Use tools and your wits to puzzle-solve. View larger. | The Story of a Grim Homecoming Homecoming's story follows the nightmare turned real life of Alex Shepherd, a war veteran returning to his hometown of Shepherd's Glen to investigate the sudden disappearance of his kid brother, Josh. From Shepherd's Glen to the foggy streets of dreaded Silent Hill, Alex must face the darkest of horrors in order to find his brother. Struggling with his own grip on reality, it's here that Alex must unravel the mystery behind his nightmares, discover the truth behind his brother's disappearance, and confront the evil that takes hold of his own flesh and blood in the process. Improved Gameplay Firmly steeped in the Survival-Horror genre its series has been pivotal in establishing, action in Homecoming remains based on exploration of the terrors residing in the communities surrounding Toluca lake and puzzle-solving skill as a means of surviving them. But to its credit game developer Double Helix refuses to rest on past laurels, choosing instead to include new more accessible gameplay in the hopes of gaining a new audience for Homecoming. Examples of this gameplay include:Next-Gen Visual and Spatial Features - Every sequel seeks reinvent the namesake game in their series. Homecoming does this in three ways, by adding the ability to toggle between a traditional third-person view and an action-oriented first-person view; by adding fully 3-D physics to the game, creating a realistic range of motion for any and all objects impacted by the player; and by adding transitions or "Hell States" that alter the game's physical landscape at points in the game both in real-time and via cinematics. All three actively change the way players see themselves and in the process create a whole new game experience. An Enhanced Combat System - Adding to the standard knives, axes, pipes and other melee weapons that made up the arsenal of previous Silent Hill games, Homecoming adds a wide variety of guns and explosives. Fitting with the military back-story of protagonist Alex Shephard, these weapons can be wielded in attacks weighted as weak or strong and can be strung together in combos to stun or incapacitate opponents, who can then be taken out with powerful finishing moves. With practice players can even perform evasive ducks and rolls and follow these up with counterattacks. But remember that enemy AI has also been significantly improved to compensate for your higher degree of combat prowess, and that it's not uncommon to battle multiple monsters simultaneously. Key Features: - Enter the next chapter of Silent Hill as you delve deeper in the tormented history of the town and learn of the evil that surrounds Toluca Lake.
- Silent Hill: Homecoming is the 1st Silent Hill game designed for Xbox 360.
- From the murky fog to the ominous shadows, all-new next-gen graphics bring Silent Hill to life like never before.
- Survive the denizens of Silent Hill with an all-new enhanced combat system that gives you a wide array of attacks and counters.
- Solve the treacherous and deadly puzzles of Silent Hill to discover its darkest secrets.
- Silent Hill: Homecoming will feature an all-new soundtrack by acclaimed series composer Akira Yamaoka.
Exceptional Replay Value Although Alex Shepherd is the only playable character in Silent Hill: Homecoming there are many other important characters--some returning from earlier games in the series--that can have a dramatic impact on the game. When interacting with these, players are given a choice in how to proceed via dialog trees. Will you take the short route letting only the search for your brother guide you or will you explore the nooks and crannies that make up the mystery of Silent Hill hidden in the small talk you share with non-playable characters? The choice is yours, with different paths providing for possible alternate endings each time you delve into the game.A Frighteningly Masterful Soundtrack All games in the Survival-Horror genre seek to create tension and unease through sound and Homecoming does this masterfully through the compositions and sound engineering of Akira Yamaoka. Having scored the music and effects for dozens of video game titles, including all of the previous games in the Silent Hill series, Yamaoka is considered a master at using sound to illicit a response.

"Welcome Home..." October 2, 2008 xxHazyShadowsxx (USA) 21 out of 23 found this review helpful
In light of a 4 Star review from C. Tempel with no critique, no valid points, and certainly no coherent sentence structure, I decided to make this one. First of all, dont listen to those Nay-Sayers (I.e. IGN) who say this game is bad (IGN obviously played the game for about 5 minutes, and remmembered that to get even more of a bad reputation, they would have to make up a bunch of fake facts.) This game is NOT as good as Silent Hill 2 (Although it certainly is VERY good). It never will be, but if you go into this game with lowered expectations, you will have a magnificent good time. One thing Double Helix (American Developers) did manage to keep is the moody feel, and the constant psychological dread that all gamers have come to know, love, hate, and get sick from. This game is chock full of it, Which is a great thing! Now, its time to de-bunk some lies that IGN may have told you: (NOTE: You may skip this if you want to hear about the story, this is just to clear the air of incesant lies that IGN tells oh so well) 1. "The game is not scary" Straight off the bat, that is total BS. Within the first 5 minutes of the game, I already jumped back in my seat. 2. "Alex is to well Handled" Well, this may be true, but he is a soldier after all... 3. "The Flashlight is basically impossible to use" Wrong, The Flashlight is very realistic. True, it is a little weak, but it works best when its pointed at the mid-waist to ground level. Again, just like a real flashlight. Now then: The story. (Note: Contains some minimal spoilers, nothing big) You are Alex Shepard. The war has taken a toll on your psyche, and you begin to have some very strange dreams about your brother. This is when you return to Sheppards Glen (Via A clever little easter egg) and learn that he has gone missing. Its Suprisingly Very good. You will begin to see what tore The Shepards apart. It draws the player in and never lets go. I felt utter disgust as I listened to a tape recorder of Adam Shepard Bad-mouthing Alex to his own brother! I felt Dread as I saw Joshua flee from Alex for no apparent reason. And I felt agony as I gazed upon a deformed remain of something un-human slither toward me, the image will stay burned in everyone's mind forever. Many imporvements have been added such as an aiming system, Full control camera angle, and an upgraded fighting system. This doesent hinder the game in any way, it only makes it more enjoyable. So in short: A must buy for a newcomer of the series, or someone who has been with it since SH1. It will give you that same gut-wrenching feeling the series does so well. Akira Yamaoka's moody beats help play the mood out all to well. Man, it feels good to be home!
Silent Hill Legacy remains intact! October 3, 2008 J. Carter (Marina del Rey, CA United States) 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
Okay, never done this so.... I have been a huge fan of silent hill since PS1. Heck, I even rank it above the resident evil franchise. So when Homecomings release date came close with so little info, I figured the game was to be a flop! Thank God I was wrong. This game is wonderful (I'm not that far into it). It spooks, it scares, makes you jump and keeps you enthralled. It's like watching a good scary movie. All the nit-picky things some talk about are just that, nit-pick. To Kapcom----thank you!
A fun creepy game that made me jump!! (WARNING SPOILERS) October 3, 2008 C. M. Magana (Temecula, CA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Please disregard C. Temples review as it is not even a review, but more so illiterate babbling! I have been a fan of SH since the first one came out. Silent Hill: Homecoming is a great addition to the rest! This is the first one I have played on an xbox360 console and not PC. While the controls were easy to get accustom to I must say the graphics were awesome! I immediately turned off all the lights in the room, turned up the volume on the surround sound and played on my 42" 1080p LCD (what a difference from the PC!!). The fact that Akira Yamaoka did the music for this SH made it even better and boy does he do a wonderful job! A nurse with no face and a hot body pops out of a bathroom stall, a hole in a glass window is bleeding, lines of insects lead you to your next clue, the mayors digging up graves and you are stuck in a maze of a sewer and when you get it wrong the clinking of spidery creatures are coming! While I've never really jumped while playing on PC I found my body very alert and responsive to the eerie black environment, the sounds and creatures. The spine-chilling and grotesque themes are amazingly crisp and the creatures just pop out at you when you least expect it! And yes it can be difficult to "see" in this game, indeed it is very dark, but that is why it is so much fun because you can't "see the whole picture" if you did it just wouldn't be that scary. The story line so far is very appealing, as to why the relationship between Alex and is family is so flawed I have still to find out but it's pretty sad, they just don't seem to care about him! The fact that in his house there are only pictures of the family with his brother and none of Alex (though there is evidence on the wall that many other pictures were hung but have since been taken down) and the tape with his angry father and the memories of him make it worse and I'm dying to find out. I love the fact that they included Pyramid Head and the nurses unlike SH: The Room (The only SH game I didn't quite care for; it just wasn't creepy enough and the room indeed got old very fast). The bosses so far have been a good challenge and very crazy looking creatures; they pack a powerful punch as do many of the other monsters. The suspense grows when you find your health low, you've got no ammo, a monster chasing after you and most of the door locks are jammed! It gets even better when you hear the bone chilling siren and the flakes of paint begin to peel off the walls revealing a hellish revised world. This game can be very challenging, but it only makes you want to play harder, some of these creatures can literally rip your body in half! (And yes you see the entire thing when they do). I have enjoyed playing this game and it was worth the wait and the money thus far. I just wish I had more ammo and more health! : ) If you are a fan of SH I highly recommend playing Homecoming! And if you're into all the blood, guts, horror, suspense and grotesque creatures this is a fun game to play that is not based in a military/space environment. UPDATE: Yeah the third boss is kinda hard....arrgg!! and I have to constantly talk to the dad until I can get to a point where I press start and attack the beast doll!!
A definitive milestone in the SH Series October 13, 2008 Scrapmetal Simon (Newtown Square, PA) Honestly this is a fantastic next-gen Silent Hill. The new development team was able to maintain the freshness of the dark and twisted environment. What I really enjoy about this game is that it has done the best job to date in creating a truly immersing experience. The camera under user control, ability to look through Alex' eyes, and over-the-shoulder shooting POV remind me of the fluidity of resident evil 4. As well, FINALLY, combat is enjoyable in this game. Formerly my biggest complaint about the series and I would avoid combat like the plague. It isn't over the top devil may cry moves, so don't expect that. It is a very basic engine that allows you to actually DODGE and pull off combos. Additionally you can pull off mini man-hunt style enemy finishing moves. The different weapons are useful for different monsters and have different finishing moves. The boss fights are manageable and again, the re-vamped combat system makes the challenge fun. If you're concerned about thrill factor, SH:H has nods towards all of our favorite SH moments (even some visual effects appear inspired by the movie) along with an outstanding soundtrack, both ambient and musically. Prior to SH:H, SH 2 and 3 were my favorites in the series for different reasons. This game seems like a brand new beast. I feel like it has the darkness and despair you could feel in SH 2 combined with the dynamic and more interactive environment in SH3. Additionally, you can still feel the strong influence from such horror movies as Session 9 and Jacob's ladder. These have been cited in the past as being strong influences upon the original horror elements of the game (esp. SH3). I recommend watching these movies as a great supplement for any die-hard SH fan. I do enjoy a good puzzle here and there, however my one complaint would be the ho-hum "find the key", "slide the pictures", or "did you see that atom on the wall? search that!" puzzles. These are nice to break up the monster mashing and scaryness, but I feel that the approach is dated. Overall, if you enjoyed SH 1-3 (I didn't really enjoy 4 that much, sorry) this game is a fine piece of work by an American team and preserves well the original vision of team Silent.
Home is where the heart is.. October 2, 2008 Travis Wayne Padgett 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Despite some low reviews, Silent Hill: Homecoming has kept me on the edge of my seat. I am currently about half-way through the game, taking it in smaller portions. I think the game is great. The graphics, sound, music is all amazing. The new control system still has some minor flogs, but it's a great improvement over the earlier Silent Hills. Though the monsters can be quite hard at times, and supplies scarce the game has kept me eagerly pressing on. After all, a survival horror is about 'surviving', even barely at times. The hellish domain will remind players of the old Silent Hills, which I found to be a welcome sight. The two bosses I have battled so far were both intense, especially the second one, that was a good freak-fest. However, I wouldn't recommend this game to a casual gamer, it is not a shooter by any means (I'm not sure how some people got that in their mind, I guess cause of RE4). It's a hard game, even for me at times, a rather experienced gamer. There is a good creepy element to the game, though in my opinion it is not up to par with it's previous games. Nonetheless it will deliver some good chills here and there. I would recommend it to any Silent Hill fans, and more avid gamers interested in the series. I know some Silent Hill fans have been skeptic since Double Helix took it over, but it really is a good, solid game in the series. I look forward to seeing where Double Helix takes Silent Hill in the future.
