Product Description When the word cheese is mentioned, most of us immediately think of France. We can't help it; it's a knee-jerk reaction. As excellent as are the hundreds of cheeses that originate from all corners of the globe, France is always the first country the comes to mind when discussing cheesemaking. Our French Cheese Assortment captures a good bit of French cheese culture with the four cheeses listed below. One is of the "stinky" variety, one is a triple-creme, one is a chevre, and one is a mountain cheese from the Alps. Buche Chevre: This classic French goat cheese is slightly aged, giving it a lot of character. Formed in the shape of a log (Buche is French for log), enjoy this cheese on salads, as a snack, or with fruit for dessert. Chaource: This decadent triple-creme is delicious at any stage of ripeness and has a slight mushroom scent with a rich, creamy flavor. Pont l'Eveque: This aromatic cheese from Normandy has a creamy, slightly spicy flavor. Pont l'Eveque has an edible reddish crust with a creamy, pale interior. It is an ancient cheese and truly one of the world's great ones. Gruyere de Comte: Created by local villagers in alpine dairies called "Fruiteries", its milk comes only from Montbeliarde and Tachete de L'est cows. Each 70+ pound wheel of Comte is aged for at least six months, resulting in a sweet and nutty masterpiece!

I Love French Cheese! November 16, 2003 Patrick O'Brien (Los Angeles, CA) 60 out of 63 found this review helpful
As much as my family and I love cheese from Italy and Spain, we love French cheese more. France is a country that produces more than 100 cheeses, so it must have been difficult to choose only four for this assortment, but in my opinion, four of the very best were chosen. We are all watching our weight at my house, so we eat a lot of salads. While cheese is definitely not a "diet food," a little in a salad goes a long way, especially when you're using Buche Chevre. My children love it on crackers as well. My wife and I reserved the chaource and the epoisses for a "wine and cheese" party, but believe me, they are so wonderful and so special, you'll be tempted to eat them anytime, party or not. The Gruyere de Comte is just so special I can't really find words to describe it. It's rich. It's creamy. It's delectable. We often eat it as a dessert cheese. Yes, it's really that good! If you're looking for a special gift, you can't go wrong with this French Cheese Assortment. These are four of the finest cheese France has ever produced.
Excellent cheese April 23, 2005 G. Bailey (the other LA) 30 out of 31 found this review helpful
The service from iGourmet is impeccable Everything arrived in perfect condition i.e. ripe (and therefore "stinky" just like it should be!!) The Styrofoam packaging was the perfect vessel for delivery; the cheese arrived "alive" from not being over chilled. I have not had cheese of this quality outside France, and this is the first time I have found "perfect" cheese in the US. If you like top quality "stinky" cheese this is for you.........
Excellent cheeses, ok service January 17, 2007 Gwendolyn J. Malone 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
The French cheese assortment is amazing. A selection of cheeses of a quality you cannot easily come by unless you have a great specialty gourmet store nearby. The Saint Andre is not my favorite type of cheese, but it is good on a nice loaf of crusty bread. The other cheeses in the selection are outstanding and I have received rave reviews from everyone I have served them to. Only negative is that they came extremely hot (even though they were in a cooler-type box with an ice pack that I assume had at one time been cold) and the softer cheeses were really melted. They still tasted great, but weren't as nice for presentation.
Hit and Miss June 21, 2007 Bluevioletz (Oakland, FL) 4 out of 10 found this review helpful
I received the four cheeses and was somewhat dissapointed because although I enjoyed 3 of the cheeses, only 2 of those 3 were meant to be served as a cheese platter (vs for cooking on the 3rd). The fourth was horrendous and I ended up throwing it away (4 other guests of mine tasted it and agreed that it was not good - we could all tell that it was not spoiled and that it was simply not a good choice for an assortment). I also agree that the assortment should have come with more information about the cheeses themselves along the lines of: You have selected this assortment, cheese names, background, taste descriptions, and serving suggestions (food and wine pairings both). All in all, one of the four cheeses was good enough to add to a watch out list so that I can hope to find it again while shopping at a local store.
Not a good gift December 26, 2003 Dillon Waltner (Hewitt, NJ United States) 13 out of 77 found this review helpful
For one thing, the packaging is totally unsuitable for gift giving. You get plastic wrapped cheeses in a styrofoam cooler box. We had to go out and buy baskets to make a suitable gift. The French assortment STINKS!!! By the time we got to my mother's house the whole car smelled like dirty feet. It would have been nice if some information were provided that gives you an idea of what each cheese is like, e.g. strong or mild, stinky or not stinky, firm or soft. Maybe some information about the cheese's origin and a few serving suggestions. You get nothing but the cheese. Since iGourmet seems to pride itself on the fact that "you never heard of most of them" you would think they would provide some more detail. What I thought would be a fantastic gift for a cheese lover and Francophile turned out to be a big flop.
