5 out of 5 stars So much more than just a great coffee   April 8, 2008

My wife has been a coffee drinker since she was in high school, and she is no pushover when it comes to coffee - she knows a good cup of coffee when she tastes it, and she can't stand bad coffee. Well, when we got this Yuban Breakfast Blend, she immediately tried it out and gave it her official seal of approval. She says that she likes the deep richness of the taste, and finds it to be a wonderfully smooth and flavorful coffee. That's one thumb up right there!

But, this is so much more than just a great coffee. Yuban uses a mix of coffees including beans from Rainforest Alliance certified farms. So, if you want to do a little something to help the environment but you would really rather not give up good coffee, then get Yuban Breakfast Blend Ground Coffee - it really is great coffee. My wife and I both give it our highest recommendations!

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff -- where have you been, Yuban?   March 31, 2008

Well, I'm sitting in my crowded commuter train, sipping my Yuban Breakfast Blend coffee. It's too early in the morning to care who is sitting behind me, and to notice anything other than the welcome fact that this coffee is VERY smooth and not acidic at all. That's as good way as any to start a Monday.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the sealed bag was its aroma. Now, most of you may not remember A&P Bokar Coffee, but I do -- Nonna Lucia drank it exclusively; she would grind it fresh, day after day -- and it smelled so good! So just opening this bag of Yuban Breakfast Blend brought back pleasant memories. It smelled robust, with a hint of aromatic (coffee) oil.

I noticed that instead of being uniformly ground, some of the Yuban coffee grounds looked a little like pipe tobacco (another one of my other happy vices). I wondered if this was because this coffee is actually a blend of at least two types of coffee (including Free-Trade coffee).

Since I wanted to get to thoroughly assess this coffee from all angles, I brewed it in many different ways. To keep the "base" uniform, I used mountain spring water. However, I brewed it 1) in a single cup mesh filter. 2) with a paper cone multi-cup filter 3) using a French Press, 4) using a multi-cup (12 cup) coffee machine (I had to use tap water with this, since I was not at home when I brewed this). I added a rounded tablespoon of coffee for each cup I drank. I tried it black, with cream, or with soy, and/or with sugar. I even added some of the Yuban Morning Blend instead of water, to a batch of brownies that I made.

The mesh and the paper cone filter brewed the absolutely smoothest tasting coffee I have ever had. No acid, no "biting", just a smoothness that I really appreciate when the Early Morning Blues bite down on me. Black is how I prefer to drink my coffee, but in order to critique this coffee fairly from every angle, I added a little sugar (very nice), then a little Soy or a little cream. Very enjoyable!! Yuban Morning Blend would actually make a nice coffee to serve with dessert.

One thing I noticed is that despite trying out several cups of this coffee in a 24 hour period, I didn't get the caffeine high I was expecting.

The French press brewed a somewhat bitter brew, but perhaps I misjudged the amount of cups the French press was capable of serving, and I may have added too much of the ground Yuban to it.

I added the cone-filtered coffee to my brownie mix (in place of water), and baked em according to the instructions, and altho the Yuban imparted a faint undertone of coffee flavor to the nice chewy brownies it was faint, and I wondered if I tasted it only becuz I knew it was there.

If you like your iced coffee very mild, then Yuban Breakfast Blend is fine as an iced coffee. I thought this was a plus, becuz I don't like to get jolted by a strong brew when I am trying to stay cool.

The next day (Sunday) I made coffee for my church meet-and-greet, using a 12 cup (paper filter) coffeemaker, and tap water. Something happened which may or may not have been due to the various sizes of grounds in this coffee blend-- the coffeemaker spewed grounds and coffee all over the table while the coffee was brewing (and one of the vestry folks DID say -- "Oh, this coffeemaker's done that before!") -- I cleaned it up and tried brewing it all over again -- this time the coffeemaker worked just fine -- no Cofeee Vesuvius this time. Those who then drank it and were kind enough to fill in my home-made rating sheets gave this Yuban Breakfast Blend high marks (an "8" out of "10") for smoothness and mellowness. No one nominated me for canonization, however.

(Scuze me, here's my subway stop. Gotta get off.Happy Monday to you.)

Yuban Breakfast Blend -- Good coffee, mellow coffee -- a user-friendly coffee, and a good way to start the day.

5 out of 5 stars A very satisfying coffee   March 28, 2008

Yuban provides a smooth breakfast blend that is easy to prepare in any automatic drip coffee machine. This particular blend is not strong or heavily grained with caffeine at all. And the rich coffee bean flavor may have you wanting to make more than one cup to take along in any coffee mug or hot thermal container for extra servings. This is what you call a relaxing cup of coffee that I recommend to any coffee drinker.

i'm not a coffee connoisseur, but i have tried several dozen specialty coffees over the years. first (and this might be significant), my wife and i actually agreed that the aroma was pleasing. the taste was better. i confess that i drink a cup of last evening's joe in the morning as my next cups are being brewed (no caffeine addiction here). last night it offered a spikey, zestful flavor. this morning, the blend seemed more mellow, more refined. the price is quite reasonable and seems to me to be well worthwhile. the previous review that included numerous comments about zuban / kraft environmental consciousness took me back. i haven't reviewed its commitment to the environment and must defer to the previous writer. in my opinion, the taste is excellent and warrants the reader's serious consideration.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding coffee   March 29, 2008

One reason to drink coffee is it's loaded with anti-oxidants. So, if you are looking for cancer prevention, coffee makes a good addition to your nutritional repertoire. Studies also show that the caffeine in coffee sharpens mental focus. The current fad with caffeine pills is silly, because those pills provide too much caffeine in a form that the body absorbs too fast. I like to sharpen my mind and prevent cancer with 2 or 3 cups of delicious coffee.

Coffee in general is good stuff. But the Yuban brand in particular is outstanding. I like its smooth, rich, bitter-free taste. And, it's reasonably priced.

In addition to tasting wonderful, Yuban has another huge advantage over many other coffees. Right on the package, it says, "Minimum 30% Rainforest Alliance Certified Coffee." Is this a come-on? To answer that, I went to [..]. I liked the answers I got there. For example, Certified areas in the Peten see a drop in fires and a deforestation rate that is 20 times lower than in other areas.
