To take an accurate reading, first position the green marker directly over the artery on the inside of your arm. |
Next, place your arm on a table so the cuff is positioned at the same level as your heart. | Instructions for Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitors There are several easy steps to taking your blood pressure with this monitor. First of all, avoid eating, smoking, and exercising for at least 30 minutes before taking a measurement. Remove tight-fitting clothing from your upper arm, and sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Slide your left arm through the cuff and position the cuff approximately 0.5-inches above the elbow. On the cuff you'll notice a green marker; position this marker directly over the artery on the inside of your arm. Next, secure the cuff with the Velcro material. The cuff should make direct contact with your skin, but you should be able to easily fit your index finger between the cuff and your arm. Place your arm on a table so that the cuff is positioned at the same level as your heart. Rest comfortably in a relaxed environment for at least 15 minutes prior to taking your blood pressure measurement. Once you feel relaxed, simply press the start button and remain still. The cuff will begin to inflate and numbers will appear on the display as the heart symbol flashes. When the measurement is complete, the cuff will deflate, and your blood pressure and pulse rate will display on the screen. If you need to stop the measurement at any time, simply press the on/off button and the monitor will immediately deflate. And remember, always consult your physician for specific information about your blood pressure. What is IntelliSense? The IntelliSense monitor inflates the cuff to the ideal level with each use -- you never have to make any adjustments to select an inflation level. This is especially convenient for hypertensive users and for people with certain arrhythmia or heart disorders because their blood pressure is so likely to fluctuate. The biggest advantage of using the IntelliSense technology is a personalized inflation every time for maximum comfort. The Importance of Home Blood Pressure Monitoring Doctors, diabetes educators, physician assistants, nurses, and other healthcare professionals all recommend home blood pressure monitoring for various reasons. Home monitoring provides your healthcare professionals with better information to understand and manage your high blood pressure. Many types of hypertension can only be detected by monitoring your blood pressure at home, including: - White-Coat Hypertension: blood pressure reading is high in your doctor's office but lower at home
- Masked Hypertension: blood pressure reading is low in doctor's office but higher at home
- Morning Hypertension: blood pressure reading is higher in the morning
Additionally, many factors can affect your blood pressure, including physical exertion, emotional fluctuations, medications, and stress. So having your blood pressure monitored at a pharmacy with an in-store device after you've been shopping or walking around might not provide you with the most accurate measurement. Monitoring your blood pressure at home allows you achieve a relaxed state more easily, and it gives you the flexibility to take your measurements at various times during the day. By keeping track of your home blood pressure readings, you can provide your healthcare professional with a log of your measurements over time. This can help them evaluate the effectiveness or need for medication. Feature-laden, deluxe model! September 25, 2005 Henry Thoreau (Olathe, KS United States) 240 out of 296 found this review helpful
Even though I haven't yet personally tested the latest, "redesigned/restyled" version of Omron's "HEM-780" model that you see pictured above (and which, I fully expect, will prove an excellent product), I HAVE very recently purchased and used Omron's PRIOR version (bearing the "HEM-780" moniker). Or, more accurately, I opted to save money by buying the "HEM-780REL" that is, essentially, the same unit except it bears (Wal-Mart's) "ReliOn" logo, has a trivially different faceplate, and is only available via Wal-Mart. (But one glance tells you that it's essentially the identical machine.) In fact, to my knowledge, ALL the "ReliOn" (logo) blood pressure monitors sold by Wal-Mart are actually manufactured by Omron, which fact is clearly (albeit discreetly) printed on the product boxes as well as on the main units themselves. Given, then, that the "ReliOn/Omron" HEM-780REL costs only about $58 (and, btw, as of this writing, you can easily behold an enlargeable photo of it at Wal-Mart's web site), it might represent better value for many buyers. Indeed, I can report that I'm extremely pleased with mine (not only its accuracy, quickness, ease-of-use, and comfortable cuff, but also its styling and ergonomic "feel"), and I can recommend it highly. ON THE OTHER HAND, Omron's (above-pictured) "new" (largely redesigned) version of their "own" HEM-780 model does have, to my knowledge, exactly ONE capability that the earlier version lacks. Namely, the new version can "average" your three most recent blood-pressure readings. Now, I can't deny that that "averaging" feature is "cool" and (more or less) useful and may, or may not, make the above-pictured, somewhat costlier, "new" version more satisfying for some buyers. However, since I myself already use my computer spreadsheet software to record a separate, "permanent log" of all my blood pressure readings (potentially very handy for saving to removable disk and/or printing out for your physician's inspection), I find that I can simply use such software to have UNLIMITED degrees of "averaging" capability (for ANY number of my prior BP readings). Moreover, by using such a spreadsheet (be it Microsoft Excel, Lotus 1-2-3, or what have you), even the "merely average" computer user, with a modicum of patience, can pretty easily create an adjacent "chart" to display automatically, simultaneously, and graphically the trending pattern of all your BP readings. Thus, I can wholeheartedly endorse keeping such a computerized log of your BP readings, regardless of which model of BP monitor you decide to buy (and my "take" is that EITHER version of Omron's "HEM-780"--i.e., "prior" or "latest"--is very likely to please you and give good service)! P.S.: Here are some tips for increasing the accuracy of your BP readings: Be sure to take two or three BP readings per session (pausing for "a minute or few" after each reading so as to let your arm's brachial artery recover after having been compressed), so that you don't get unduly misled by the occasional "odd" reading. Likewise, during all BP measurements, be sure to position your arm (the cuff) at the same level (altitude) as your heart, lest your readings be too high or too low. And be sure to position the cuff on your left arm EXACTLY as its instructions clearly illustrate.
Good Quaility Monitor October 17, 2005 Christopher F. Finney (Salisbury, NC and Mt. Pleasant, SC) 91 out of 97 found this review helpful
I haven't had the chance to conpare this unit to the readings at the doctors office (taking them at the same time). But I have taken readings at the drug store and then 5 min later taking it at home. It does seem to give true readings. They has never been any really off readings. No wild swings. It is very easy to use and comes with good instructions and a nice carrying case. Makes it easy to take on vacation with you. AC adapter makes it where you don't have to worry about dead batteries.
Best I've seen. March 21, 2006 Steven P. Baughn MD (Yardley, PA) 59 out of 60 found this review helpful
As a primary care physician, I've seen a lot of BP monitors that my patients bring to the office to check for accuracy and other features. This one seems to be the best. The easy to apply cuff, auto inflation, its accuracy, the memory, the averaging feature, the AC converter all make it worth the slightly higher price over other Omrons, which I consider the most accurate brand. Since I too have high blood pressure, I decided to buy one myself!
Great BP monitor December 25, 2005 Derek (New York, NY) 34 out of 34 found this review helpful
This is a great blood pressure monitor. The display is big and easy to read, it's quiet, and the ComFit cuff is comfortable. I also find the results to be consistent, and they match up very well with my old Omron monitor (HEM-712C). However, it's important to compare any BP monitor to a known measurement. This is my second HEM-780N2 -- the first one always returned measurements that were about 10-15 mm Hg too low. I exchanged it and the second one seems to be working accurately.
best of the omrons January 3, 2006 Allan (mahopac, ny United States) 41 out of 41 found this review helpful
I work for a major rx chain, have sold many of these models. This one is the best of the omron line. The cuff is awesome, easy to wrap around the arm. We sell this unit for 1oo bucks. I should have bought mine at amazon.
