5 out of 5 stars Trent's New Discipline   July 22, 2008

This review is for the downloadable version of The Slip that has been available for free on the NIN website for several months. Today (07/22/08) the same MP3-only version of the album (with ten songs) was made available here on AMZN, along with the limited-edition physical CD. I know nothing about the bonus DVD that comes with that package. Here I am reviewing the music of The Slip for the benefit of fans wondering about the album. The bonus DVD on the physical release is probably only essential for collectors or those uncomfortable with downloading. But note that the album's music is still available for free on the NIN website (apparently forever), and Trent Reznor is obviously willing to forego royalties in order to cut out the middlemen who distribute physical products.

The digital music era has freed Trent from record company strictures, and he sure is active lately, as The Slip is technically his fourth album-length product in about a year (though the double Ghosts I-IV should be regarded as an experimental side project). I was not too enthralled by Year Zero, finding it forced and unfocused, but The Slip is much more coherent and self-contained, with Trent displaying a sense of "Discipline" that allows him to both look forward and build upon his past strengths. The blistering "Letting You" recalls Trent's classics of barely-contained rage, and the fascinating "Echoplex" recalls some of the moody experimentation of The Fragile. The quiet and haunting "Lights in the Sky" is surely Trent's best piano ballad ever. The two extended atmospheric experiments, "Corona Radiata" and "The Four of Us Are Dying" hearken back to the most terrifying quiet moments of The Downward Spiral while also feeling fresh and forward-looking. The only misstep is the weak whispered vocals on "Demon Seed," though that track is still a powerful close to Trent's most focused album is recent memory.

In fact, this might be the tightest collection of songs in the history of NIN. Trent no longer has the need to create albums as lengthy as record companies want when they want them. Faithful NIN fans should get their hands on this, either physically or virtually. [~doomsdayer520~]

5 out of 5 stars Awesome little album from Trent.   July 23, 2008

I've been a Nails fan since the Broken/TDS days. Yes, it's common knowledge that Trent's calmed down a little. It happens with age. Some people can't accept that. Thing is, Trent has continued to be on the cutting edge of music for the majority of his career. He doesn't care what you think. He doesn't make music solely for you. He makes it because he loves doing it and he's dedicated his life to it.

On to The Slip. It's a short album -- comparable in length to With Teeth. But that's where the similarities end. It's more of a straight up rock record at first listen. And you will hear a lot of Trent's signature lyrical pieces such as "Fading away," "I am here right beside you" and "put the gun in mouth." But that's part of the fun. Classic Trent. Classic NIN. This is fun little album with something for everyone on it. Two awesome instrumentals -- dark and eerie. A great piano/vocal song that could find a home on Still. And some really aggressive kickass rock songs. If you can't get into an album like this, I can't help you.

The Limited Edition DVD is well worth the price of admission. It contains rehearsal versions of five songs from The Slip. And the energy displayed here by Trent (with no crowd) is inspiring. The guy really loves what he does. And one of the things I love most about NIN is when you hear live versions of the songs it's never like listening directly to the CD. He throws in a lot of different touches here and there to his songs that just plain rock. Echoplex, Head Down and Letting You really capture the feel for me here.

If you're a fan of NIN, buy a copy. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Good news all around!   July 22, 2008

Good news, part 1: I agree that this is Reznor's tightest set of rock tunes in ages. Part 2: Check out the rehearsal footage on the bonus DVD. The band is air-tight, tough and exciting as ever. This bodes well for the upcoming tour. Part 3: The most important thing here is what Trent has been accomplishing since he gave his record company the bird. Without the pressures of corporate B.S., he has been more successful and creative than ever. No major label would have touched an uncommercial experiment like "Ghosts I-IV", and this freedom has re-energized him into rocking like a M.F. on this terrific new release. And as the last laugh, these releases are raking in millions! This bodes well not just for NIN, but for all truly talented artists who are tired of working for stuffed suits and seeing fans get ripped off. Like I said, good news all around!

5 out of 5 stars "Limited"   July 23, 2008

"The Slip" is marked "Limited Edition." I ordered my LE on its release date and received the numbered edition, 146,903/250,000. A DVD rides on the hip of the CD. I like it! A required buy for all NIN fans.

5 out of 5 stars Trent keeps getting better with age   July 29, 2008

I've always loved Trent Reznor and his musical style but for some reason this album seems to remind me of his early days. I first downloaded the digital download off of the bands website From the instant i heard the entire album i knew i had to own it. It's loud with great beats but yet in moments it conveys his meloncholy side. I find it to be a great work out music. Trent Reznor will have you singing along for hours after you've finished listening to this album. Lights in the sky has to be one of my favorites from the get go it's morose melody strikes you and brings you down into his sullen thoughts. Unlike many of his other albums it's a little on the short side for my liking but other wise I found that it was a musical feast for the senses.
