Create universal wonder in Spore, an exciting new simulation game that lets you develop your own personal universe. Work your way through five evolutionary phases, including Cell, Creature, Tribe, Civilization and Space, that offer unique challenges, thrills and goals. For example, you can start in Cell and nurture one species from a simple aquatic organism all the way until it becomes a sentient life form. Or you can jump right in and begin building tribes and civilizations on multiple planets. What you do with your universe is totally up to you.

The powerful creation tools of Spore are easy to use, allowing you to effortlessly design every aspect of your universe. Creatures, vehicles, building and even starships are all within your grasp. While Spore is a single-player game, your creations and other players' creations are automatically shared between your galaxy and theirs, offering a nearly limitless number of worlds to visit and enjoy. You can also go online to view the incredible things other players have made and can even pull those items into your universe. Spore gives you the chance to make worlds and beings that evolve, grow and delight you every step of the way.

5 out of 5 stars Great Game! I love it.   December 9, 2008

I bought this game last thursday and both my wife (who in general "hates" videogames") and me absolutely love it. Graphics are fantastic, sound effects are great and the game is absolutely fun.

It is very easy to play and understand and its fun to see your creature evolve from a single cell to a tribe (we are in that stage now).

A lot of complaints are around people trying to install it in multiple machines/configurations/users; and those 1 star reviews simply don't match the experience that it is playing this game.

I recommend it 100%.

5 out of 5 stars Must have...rts and design and learning   December 30, 2008

Great design tool for machines and the shape of your creature. Truly innovative game. No tech challenges yet on the iMac. Like the color patterns, many options. Designing your own is great outlet for creative kids, including younger, who can upload their own designs.
Later on the Real Time Strategy is pretty good. It's a little like a mini-game of Sid Meier Civ, except without any exploration element.
Combat can be quite intense. I left on middle setting for difficulty and got beaten bad at Civilization stage.
Repalyability is great. TOns of little things in game like the Ancient creatures and alien visitation during Creature phase. Get this game if you want a good strategy and "god game." I don't think it'll meet expectations in either class of game as the best in its class, but it blends RTS and design very well. Plus the creatures are cute, and have real attitude...

5 out of 5 stars Great for younger kids   November 29, 2008

My 8 year old absolutely loves this game. I could understand why older more sophisticated gamers would find it boring, but it's perfect for younger kids. I can't understand the age rating of 10+. My son figured everything out and got 3 levels into the game (to the "tribal stage") within the first week without ever looking at the instructions. I think kids these days are much more adept at learning to play these games than the people who make up the age ratings give them credit for.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing despite DRM scandal   October 16, 2008

I admit it, I downloaded Spore. I had read all the freaking out about DRM, and I wanted to join the downloading orgy.
I played it for 3 days... and it was so good I bought it.

Why did I buy it?

1- The download was crippled, blocking off a lot of internet interactivity. You wouldn't think this would be a big deal, b/c it's not 'head-to-head', but the designer Will Wright had a cool explanation of how things work -- the internet 'pulls in' other people's Spore creatures as a copy onto your computer, and you play against that copy.
The internet has more than just that, though. The whole "Sporepedia" really requires the 'net.

2- I support this kind of game development. Maxis has made an incredible game. I get to make living creatures, cool tech, everything. WOW And it's replayable in lots of different ways.
Many people complained about the separate games not being the 'best of catagory', but I don't normally play those kinds of games. So I enjoyed all aspects.

3- I want to play games that are not 'walk up and kill it' ONLY. While Spore has that for people wanting violence, it also has far more. So much more, in fact.
I was upset that at later stages even non-violent communities/creatures wiind up obliged to 'take over' everything. Too bad for non-violent entities that they are never allowed to win in this Western World paradigm-shaped game. (It's quite possible the Earth is surrounded by peaceful aliens just waiting for us to evolve before they initiate contact.)

4- my $$$ was the most powerful vote. I'm glad I 'gave the finger' to DRM, and downloaded the game. But the game is so good, I want the game dev market to be influenced as well financially that -- yes, it really IS that good.

Do I care if you download it or buy it? Nah. But as a gamer, I recommend trying it. It's enmeshing, enveloping, absorbing -- and awesome.

Oh yes -- this is not a game about evolution. Evolution actually is one thing NOT happening in the game. Its more about custom-shaping 'pseudo-life' as you see fit, and then doing stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Good for laughs and relaxing   October 10, 2008

Before I ordered this game I was looking around trying to find some reviews to give me an idea of what I would be buying. Half of the reviews I found were negative, but me being hard headed I ordered it anyway and I am glad I did. I have had so much fun with this game, there is so much to do and there isnt alot of complicated controls to worry about.

-Pros
1. You can create and/or modify everything in the game
2. Decent for young kids and adults alike.
3. Very high replay value since nothing is ever the same.
4. No set paths that you have to follow, just use your imagination and just have fun.

-Cons
1. DRM (Digital Rights Management) Sucks and EA limits you to 3 activations before you have to call them and ask for extention.

Overall I am very happy with this title and I would suggest it to anyone who just wants a simple and fun game, whether you play or just create, its all up to you on how you want to do it. Enjoy :-)
