5 out of 5 stars Two for one   November 28, 2008
Richard L. Steiner (OREGON United States)

I have the Adobe Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements 7 duo installed on my VISTA powered laptop and have worked with them several days. I started using Adobe Photoshop Elements version 3 a number of years ago and thought it was good, but somewhat complicated to use with a long learning curve involved. The new Elements version 7 retains most of the original features and complexity but is upgraded and the tools are more sophisticated in how they are applied and the results they produce.

Some reviewers of Adobe Photoshop Elements have upgraded from version 6 and complain that there is little new in the latest edition. That may be true, but there is a noticeable difference between version 3 and this most recent rendition. One of the most obvious features to appear in version 7 is the addition of on-line storage, photo sharing and available tutorials.

There is an extra charge for Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 "Plus" which provides additional on-line storage space. This is not to imply that Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 "basic" is one of those come-on condensed programs that get bundled in new computers. Photoshop Elements 7 out of the box is a full blown photo editing program and stays that way without any additional charge unless that additional on-line storage is desired. The downside to this option to invest in the "Plus" feature is how the program startup screen nags to join every time the program is opened. So far I haven't found a way to say no thanks--don't bother me with this again.

The Adobe Photoshop Elements programs are consistently rated number one in digital photo editing reviews and that is probably deserved. I recently purchased, installed and started to use the Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Ultimate program for editing my photos. This program is often rated number two by reviewers, but it is cheaper than the Adobe software. I like the Corel program a lot, but the Adobe program is equally good and maybe just a bit better in some ways--fancier and more colorful screens for one thing. However, for the advanced amateur digital photographer like me the difference is a matter of which program is easier to use. I think that may be a matter of personal choice in this case.

Now for the Adobe PREMIER Elements 7: This is the program one needs in order to download, construct, edit and produce video/slide show projects. It is the DVD (and Blu-ray) maker lots of editing programs lack. I have previously used a Roxio video making program and found it buggy and without all of the flexibility I wanted. The Adobe Premier Elements 7 program has more options and creative features. It is certainly easier to use than the Roxio software.

As with all of the DVD maker programs, one must have the right computing capacity and the proper DVD burning drive. Older wimpy computers will probably have trouble with Premier Elements 7 and apparently crashes are not uncommon if there isn't enough RAM available. I have the software loaded into a VISTA laptop and not had any problems of note. Saving a project as one goes along is a good thing to do just in case.

This software is primarily and obviously well designed for making movie type videos. However, I have used my Adobe Premier Elements 7 program mostly for creating slide shows from my collections of digital photos and it does a great job. It allows me to organize my pictures add transitions between them in a slide show, put background music in and insert titles too. I like the ability to arrange things in DVD chapters and menus and my finished slide shows surprise me in how professional they look.

So far, I have not had any problem with creating DVD shows that work in my disk players connected to ordinary television sets.

I can recommend both Adobe Premier Elements 7 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 7. The digital photographer just beginning to edit photos and videos will find these programs useful as will the more advanced picture makers.

If you don't have any version of these Adobe products this is a great deal.

A lot of the negative reviews on here are because there is no major upgrade on version 7.
Well that's ok- then there was no need to upgrade if you have version 6.

I didn't have any editing software so this is great.
And a lot cheaper on Amazon than Best Buy. This same item was $150 there and Photoshop and Premiere seperatly were $100 EACH!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful video and photo editing -- worth updating   December 16, 2008

This combo is a great package for those that want high powered editing in a entry level price.

Photoshop Elements 7.0 continues to be a powerful editing package with some nice new additions. With the smart brush tool, a few simple clicks and the blue of the sky can be emphasized, teeth can be whitened, a photo can be converted to black and white with remaining accents of color, and selected areas can be made brighter, darker, or have increased contrast.

Photoshop Elements offers a range of tools from fully automated tools such as "Auto Smart Fix" to high powered editing tools that allow for a wide range of editing and creativity.

The organizer can be used for stills, video, projects, and audio. Tags can be used to classify files in a multitude of ways. This version of the organizer seems to respond faster even with close to 100,000 files. The catalogue from previous versions is easily converted so all the classification done in a previous version is still there.

I have found this product to be stable after a lot of tweaking of Vista. While this was a struggle to get right Adobe has a great support page that gives a wide range of problem solving steps to get Vista to play better with Elements (I had the same problems with Elements 6.0). As a side benefit of working though this I have also been able to figure out how to adjust Vista to make other programs work better. It is a case of Vista's security "features" making it difficult for programs to function fully.

Premier Elements biggest additions are support for AVCHD (including 5.1 sound) and the new `membership' based web site from Photoshop. Another minor change is, adding media into Premiere Elements is easier as the look has changed slightly but in a way that makes access much easier.

As a companion to Premiere Elements 7 I highly recommend The Muvipix Guide to Adobe Premiere Elements 7: The tools, and how to use them, to create great videos on your personal computer by Steve Grisetti.

I have owned all the versions of Photoshop Elements and Premer Elements. While this might not have been the biggest advance in features I still feel that is a significant enough update to justify buying even if you have previous versions of this package.

5 out of 5 stars Best Photo Editor Available But Not a Must Have Upgrade   December 18, 2008

I use Adobe Photoshop Elements primarily to prepare images for my web store, so I'm not in a position to comment about some of it's more advanced features. What I can say is that for importing, touching-up, resizing and filing images, I think it's the gold standard.

I photograph many of the products I sell in a room adjoining my office using a Panasonic Lumix digital camera equipped with an Eye-Fi SD card, which sends images over my wireless network to my desktop computer. Upon returning to my desk, I open the photos in Elements, and in no time, my images are ready for web publication.

For my editing purposes, I tend to use Element's manual tools. While the Smart Fix feature might work well for family and vacation photos, I haven't found it to be all that useful for product photography. It seems as if the changes it makes rarely result in an improved, more accurate image. Instead, I frequently turn to the "Enhance" menu and manually adjust the lighting levels, hue, and sharpness, as needed. Sliding tools and graphs along with real-time previews of changes make such adjustments a piece of cake, and the multiple levels of undo are a huge convenience when changes don't produce the expected result.

Other frequently-used tools include the Clone Stamp and the truly amazing Spot Healing Brush. Removing dust specks or textural flaws is completely painless with this powerful tool. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say it's almost like magic the way it can repair problem spots.

The Process Multiple Files feature is great for saving and naming a collection of images. For example, I might have six images of a product, and instead of saving each individually, the software will automatically save them in the format I select and name them with incremental numbering. If desired, you can include resizing and some automated enhancements as part of the process.

I realize I use only the most basic features of this powerful program, but it's good to know that as my experience level increases, I'll have what I need for a long time to come. My guess is, only true professionals requiring highly advanced image editing capabilities would ever need to move up to the full Photoshop program.

For me, Photoshop Elements is 5 stars all the way. There's one caveat, though. Prior to version 7, I was using version 5, and after using the new version for about a month, I can't see that it's a "must-have" upgrade. There have been some cosmetic changes to the interface, and it does seem that the program overall runs a little faster, but I think I could go back to version 5 and not feel I was losing any significant functionality.

Perhaps this really isn't a criticism, but a testament to what a great program Elements has become. It would be hard to improve on something that's just about as good as it gets, and for most amateurs and semi-professionals, you really don't need to look anyplace else.

5 out of 5 stars Adobe Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements 7   November 11, 2008

For the price there are no better photo & video editting software. Version 7 has some tutorials but you really need much more to make best usage of these very powerful programs, including manual(s) & community college noncredit courses, if available. Belonging to a camera club would also help. Of course, there is no substitute for trail & error experimenting.
