5 out of 5 stars Great OS, but not good uprade   September 7, 2008

Windows Vista is great operating system because it is more stable than xp and has some great new features. My parents always had xp and it was good, but then I needed a new computer for school I had to get a certain laptop and it came with vista.

Pros: Great user interface, more stability, windows sidebar, it is more secure, and supports more programs. Also vista has a new search bar that makes finding a file easier and vista has pretty much everything great about xp in it.

Cons: If you had a single core cpu at 2ghz on xp you'll have to get a 2gb core 2 duo to get about the same performace. Some old programs don't work with vista (usally 95 and 98). Not a whole lot new features to make you want to upgrade your whole computer.

If you are getting a new computer with good specs choose vista, but if you're just upgrading then just stay with xp. Overall Vista is a great os.

P.S Don't listen to all the crap about how it is really buggy and stuff like that because it's not.

5 out of 5 stars Most computers will run slower with this upgrade   October 23, 2008

There are many pros and cons to Microsoft Vista. If you are buying a new computer, then Vista is a good option. The computer manufacturer will have installed Vista, with all of the correct drivers. The modern computer will also likely be fast enough to run Vista. However, if you are looking at buying this product, then you are likely installing Vista on an existing computer.

I installed Vista on a Dell with Intel hyper threading. This computer now runs about 80% as fast as it did before. I needed to perform screen shots with Microsoft's latest, so this was a good upgrade for me. However, for most computers, that are already running just fine, I do not see why Vista really adds that is worth the performance sacrifice that it will likely exact from older hardware.

Vista does have many features beyond what XP provides. The screens are much cleaner and visually appealing. Security is improved. Though you will frequently get security pop-up's asking if its okay to do something. The improvements to Vista, for the vast majority of users, are mostly cosmetic. It may not be worth the hassle of finding drivers and slowing down your computer just to run Vista.

5 out of 5 stars Works like a Charm for My Varied App Suite   March 31, 2008

I've been using Windows back since the earliest version that installed on DOS. With every new release there's been people complaining about the changes and the interface. Then they get used to it and complain when a new version comes out to change things again. It's the way life goes. I have to say I have both my laptop and main PC on Vista Ultimate for several months now and am really pleased with it.

I am a computer game reviewer so we have tried ALL sorts of games on Vista. We haven't had any problems at all. I do video and photo editing. No problems with any of my editing tools (except an old Dazzle input device which is really Dazzle's fault, not Window's). I've got QuickBooks and a variety of other office style applications. Honestly, there hasn't been a problem with anything. They all run smoothly.

Remote terminal? Fine. Fax software? Fine. I like the new visual interface. I haven't had any slowdown issues with the software running. I like the update interface, to keep everything in sync with the latest versions.

I don't want to discount people who have issues with software upgrades. I've certainly had my share of problems when trying to upgrade Adobe or Office in the past. I know these types of issues exist. All I can offer is in my household, with the wide variety of software we're running it has been smooth as silk. We even got a new machine for my son for college, with Vista, and he hasn't hit any problems with it at all - even with all the software he downloads, music he plays, and apps he runs.

I know people who try to "cling" to old versions of an OS - like Windows 95 - and the problems it causes is just immense. I know it's a pain sometimes to upgrade, but I do recommend it highly. Vista has been a great platform for us, and it means going forward that we know the software we buy will click in smoothly to our OS.

5 out of 5 stars I Have to Say, I'm Okay with Vista   April 5, 2008

I finally upgraded to Vista and it was a long time coming. I must admit for the longest time I felt envious of people who were operating on a system newer than mine, but I also felt secretly satisfied that XP was more secure and faster. No eye candy though. However, as both a Mac and a PC user, I had all the eye candy one would want with Leopard and it doesn't slow anything down.

What I don't understand is why Vista has to come in so many editions:

Windows Vista Home Basic
Windows Vista Home Premium
Windows Vista Business
Windows Vista Ultimate

Plus all the upgrade versions. Why not just one version that does it all, you know, the way they do it in the Mac world.

Okay, all that aside, I have two PCs, both desktops, one at work (which is actually mine, not my employers) and one at home. At work I installed Home Premium and at home I installed Vista Ultimate. I didn't time the installation in either place as I was doing other stuff during the process, but neither install took more than an hour.

I did not do clean installs in either case, instead opting for the upgrade option, just to see if it worked. Besides, I have lots of back up hard drives so I wasn't worried and it appears I didn't need to, because both installs went swimmingly. I understand others have not been so lucky, but I was.

After choosing my local time, currency, keyboard layout, user name, icon, wallpaper and password Vista decided my computers were good to go and they were.

Right off the bat I have to say, I like the Aero interface. Is it better than Leopard's, not really, but it's not worse either, just different. I've got four gigs of ram in both computers and though maybe Vista might have been a tad slower doing some photoshop work than XP, it wasn't all that noticeable. Some things may have been a bit slower opening, but not enough to make me miss XP. All in all, I have to say I'm okay with Vista.

5 out of 5 stars It works great!   April 11, 2008

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RZR6O8M0OB8TR I almost feel bad for saying this. Like I'm somehow proving myself just a Microsoft shill. But the fact is that, for me, Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 works and it works great. To be sure I have a decent computer. I loaded Vista onto a Dell XPS 710 that has a Intel Cor 2 Quad CPU, 4GB RAM, a 256mb Nvidia 8600 GTS video card, and a Creative X-Fi Xtreme-Audio sound card. The computer was made after Vista came out, but at the time Dell did not support Vista with this system. So I got Windows XP professional, and at the time I was grateful because of what I heard about Vista.

I decided it was time to take a risk and see if I could push the hardware to its potential. I'm glad I did. The upgrade was quick (about 20 minutes) without any problems at all. Everything works and works faster and cleaner than with Windows XP.

I do highly, highly recommend getting a text on Vista if you want to best use it to its fullest and personalize it as you can. Learning more about Vista from a book like Windows Vista Inside Out really helped me to discover a lot more features and a lot more improvements and a lot more options.

Vista is definitely a great step up for me and I'm very glad I went ahead and upgraded. It works and it works great. That's my experience.
