Amazon.com The wide 21-inch diameter funnel swallows leaves as fast as you can feed them, mincing them down to fine mulch. This little unit is surprisingly powerful, and at only 17 pounds it's so light you can mount it atop a trash can or bungee-cord a plastic bag to the outfeed and collect the waste. Out of the box, it goes together literally in minutes with just a screwdriver. The hopper tilts to 45 degrees to make loading easier, and the sliding control lever is easy to read, with settings for grass, thatch, wet leaves, dry leaves and pine needles. Double cutting lines are powered by an 8-amp motor on regular household current, and the motor intake filter comes out easily for cleaning. A built-in storage compartment keeps extra line at the ready, and changing cutter lines is easy. It's a great unit for the homeowner, reducing 11 bags of leaves to just one bag of mulch, ready for use in flower beds and vegetable gardens.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Great product if you understand its limitations September 11, 2004 Bonner Photographic (Denison, Iowa) 120 out of 123 found this review helpful
This is a leaf shredder - not a mulcher. It is a sting trimmer inverted with a funnel on top. I used this to shred all my fall leaves - works great. My wife would load them and I would give it a bit of a stir with a stick. Shaking the unit back and forth will get small sticks to fall through without killing the strings. Don't abuse it and it will work great. Forget what its purpose is and you will get grumpy and write negative reviews on Amazon. Leaf mulch went well on our beds, some of our plants didn't even die back - they were nice and toasty warm under their 4 inch blanket of shredded leaves. Just had to play the guessing game of when to remove some of the mulch to let the plants grow. Too soon and the spring frost will get them. Too late and they will end up stringy. I love my shredder. My in-laws will be getting one soon.
Start Assembly Early November 1, 2005 Barbara Smith (Apollo, PA USA) 23 out of 23 found this review helpful
Two heads (and four hands) ARE better than one when it came to assembly of the unit. My husband and I started to assemble the Flowtron in mid-afternoon and found ourselves losing ground with daylight. Most of our trouble was with the funnel (used the wrong screw on one side that jammed in and couldn't get the correct screw on the other side to "grab"). Maybe a better description of the screws would help or even separate packaging of each type. Once we got the unit together, I carried it (hubby took care of putting away our spare screw can and tools) to our beta testing site; it is lightweight and easy to carry. We plugged it in, turned it on and it worked like a charm! We soon forgot the frustration in the beginning and are actually looking forward to getting back out there today. Fortunately we have lots of heavy duty extension cords so we can take our mulcher to practically any part of our yard to chop the leaves and mulch my flower beds.
THE FLOWTRON LE-900 IS A GREAT LEAF MULCHER!! February 28, 2003 C. McCloud (Fayetteville, NC United States) 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
I purchased the Flowtron LE-900 before I read Methodairman's review (see below) and fully expected I would be disappointed with it after it arrived. What a surprise when I immediately put it to work mulching more than 60 large bags of oak leaves and it performed flawlessly! Yes I had to change the trimmer lines after about 10 very large bags but the unit came with plenty of extra lines which were very quick and easy to change. For leaves smaller and softer than oak and for a less fine cut setting I'm sure the line change interval could be stretched to 15-20 bags. Bottom line: If you want to mulch leaves quickly and easily this is the mulcher for you!
Very Useful November 24, 2003 PJL (Tallahassee, FL United States) 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
I recently bought a Flowtron LE-900 from Amazon. It was a bit tricky for one person to assemble, but it went together reasonably quickly. I have a 135 year old white oak in my front yard and last year it gave up over 120 39-gallon plastic bags of leaves. This year some of the leaves have begun to fall and my experience so far with the Flowtron is great. I reduced about five bushels of leaves to mulch for my garden in about ten minutes. This saves buying plastic bags and provides a natural fertilizer for next Spring's tomatoes. A note of caution for those with Spanish moss; pick it out of the leaves and don't attempt to mulch it as it strains the Flowtron. Also, place the device on a large garbage can for best results as it helps reduce dust. And BTW, you still have to rake the leaves!
Earthen Floors & Plasters. April 21, 2005 S. Walker 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
I bought the Flowtron specifically to supply the small pieces of straw needed for the mud plasters and a mud floor in our straw bale home - the straw helps bind and strengthen the mix. A third of a straw bale was taken care of in less than ten minutes and the results were fantastic, saving me hours of cutting by hand. For any natural builders out there, I highly recommend this machine. Was it hard to put together? Well, after reading the other reviews and glancing at the instructions - which were well meaning and unclear - I just looked at the thing and did what seemed obvious. Trust your own brain, consult the instructions lightly and you'll have no problem.
