Very good tool June 19, 2007 Derek (San Diego, CA United States) 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
It's surprising what a nice wood case and well-built tool you get for the price. The box is held closed magnetically. To keep the extra pins in place you will want to put a little cloth or something over them before closing the case. I've been wanting to open my watch for a while. Somehow the jeweler I took it to couldn't open it. A watch repair guy wanted a ridiculous amount of money just to open it (still baffling me). I opened it within a few minutes of taking this tool out of the box. Fairly simple process. As another reviewer mentioned, the pins need to be fully inserted into the tool. It comes with variously shaped pins to match different watches. I picked the three that have a squarish tip. You align these three pins with three of the six notches around the edge of the back plate. Adjustment to fit the watch is smooth and easy. With the pins sitting in the notches, you can unscrew it like a jar lid. I found I needed to hold the watch against my carpet floor to start. Very simple but very hard to do without the precise fitting of this tool. I found it very helpful for putting the back plate back on too, because it's otherwise hard to hold the plate on, flat, and aligned while screwing it in. Using the tool gives enough control to do it gently and carefully without scratching it or cross-threading (go slow and careful, though). The instructions were not especially helpful, but not really necessary either. It's not much more complicated than using a socket set or a crescent wrench. Have a paper towel when you open it, because it comes lightly oiled in its plastic bag. I recommend opening your watch in a place where any tiny pieces falling out won't get lost. I will need to find a replacement gasket for my watch. The one that came out has expanded.
Affordable tool, works great! September 13, 2006 badun (Florida) 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
I had a pile of watches waiting for me to take them to the jewelry store for battery replacement, but I finally got tired of the pile and bought this tool instead. It quickly took care of every watch and was easy to set up and use. I see no reason why it won't last forever, so I consider it an excellent investment.
Not perfect but it works. What do you expect for less than $10? May 24, 2007 CKC (SoCal, USA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
It's not perfect but it works which gets it 4 stars. The 5th star is for the price - under $10. It took me less than a minute to figure out how it works even though there were no instructions supplied with it. For those people complaining about the bits being loose or falling off, push them all the way into the sockets until they click! Then you can use the tool with the bits facing downwards without them falling off! Another tip - first adjust the spacing of the two bits using the thumbscrew to fit your watch, then adjust the spacing of the third bit using the handle screw. I couldn't open my Tag Hauer case back with it though. The case was screwed on too tight to undo without needing to put the watch in a vice!
Good tool for the job January 29, 2007 D. Hibler (Chandler, AZ) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Good tool, it does what is it meant to do, open the back of watches with ease. Man this is so much better than scratching watchbacks with pliers. So far its been able to open all my watches with no issues
Better than expected March 25, 2007 Lance Ryan Murdock (Findlay Ohio) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
After reading some of the reviews, I was concerned that the product might not come as described. However, my package arrived exactly as described in the description. My tool arrived in a wooden box, with padding and slots to hold all of the inserts. The tool comes with more sets of inserts than I expected, also. There aren't really any instructions with it, but I had no problems figuring it out. I am not a watch repair expert, I just needed to replace some batteries. I was successfully using it within 3 minutes of opening it.
