I purchased this carrier to transport my "Y" frame mountain bike. Setup was simple (10 minutes). Prior to buying the Swagman, I researched the net to find the best product available...Swagman. The unit can transport one OR two bikes. If you are only transporting one bike, simply do not mount two of the four wheel supports (supplied) and one frame "U hook" support. The wheel supports are mounted using wingnuts. To prevent theft, I suggest replacing the wing nuts with standard locking nuts (available at Home Depot etc.). Once you have your bike "fited" to the carrier, you will not need to move the supports.
If you do not have a locking hitch pin, BUY ONE. You can purchase them at U-Haul or other hitch dealers or automotive parts dealers. To prevent theft you need TWO locking hitch pins:
One for the hitch attached to your vehicle, and one to secure the rack to the hitch mounting bar (see instruction pamphlet on their website swagman.net).
The unit comes with a pin to connect the rack to the hitch bar AND a hitch pin, but both do NOT lock. Swagman sells a locking hitch pin (20.00 at Amazon) that will work to reduce the possibility of theft. Again, you need two locking hitch pins: one fore the hitch and one to secure the carrier to the bar. It's an excellent product.

I am extremely pleased with the swagman bike rack. It was so easy to install, lightweight enough for me to handle alone and secures the bike extremely well. This is a great product for the price and I will use it for a long time.I drive an '07 toyota 4 runner and this bike rack keeps my bike very stable. I would buy it again!

The design of this bike rack is so much better than the typical design that holds the bikes by the frame. We initially purchased a well made Allen bike rack but we didn't like the way the bikes were mounted so we researched and decided to try this one, we are very happy with this purchase. This rack holds the bikes secure and accommodates any size frame or bike. Loading and unloading the bikes is a breeze and the rack itself is very easy to install on the vehicle. The rack feels very solid and well made. We did purchase the Swagman hitch stabilizer which does a super job at making the rack a rock solid fit.
As a few other reviewers have mentioned, just watch out for the ratcheting top clamps, they can pinch your fingers if you aren't careful ... I consider this a very minor problem.

The Swagman XC2 (6450) was easy to assemble. It took about 10 minutes. I bought a locking "J" pin to use instead of the included hitch pin. With the locking "J" pin, the rack does not move at all. There is no need for an additional anti-sway mechanism. The bike is held firmly in place with a couple of good presses down on the hook (I use a piece of cloth over the frame where the hook touches because of my OCD nature). It has a place for a small lock to prevent the hook from being released but the only purpose it would serve is to keep the honest, honest. I have driven over 1000 miles between states in my Chevy Colorado (hidden hitch) without issue. It had plenty of clearance going up and down my driveway and in and out of store parking lots. For the $140 price tag it's awesome compared to paying close to 300 for a Thule or Yakima tray rack. If you want a great rack, with a small price tag that does its job well, this is for you.
Summary: For the price I paid you can't beat the solid construction, easiness of use, and performance. I have no regrets and will be buying the extension to add two bikes when my wife and little one start riding.

I needed a bike rack that would work for my road bike and my wife's Schwinn cruiser that doesn't have a top bar. There are products that that attach to the bike to simulate a top bar so I can hang it but this Swagman bike rack takes care of the problem without the extra equipment. The rack takes some assembly but very easy in my opinion. The rack is not that heavy and attached right to my Yukon. When you set the bracket widths to your bike and snug the padded hook down, the bikes are nice and secure. The Schwinn was secure even with the low point of contact for the hook. I was very impressed with the functionality and ease of use. Would recommend for any bike but especially when you need to carry bikes without the top bar.
