Suitable for Ipod, not for viewing on Tv July 29, 2008 varasztan (Arizona) 25 out of 26 found this review helpful
The biggest mistake a person can make in purchasing this item is to assume that the converted video will be of any reasonable quality when viewed on a tv. The results were extremely fuzzy, lots of trails. . .plain horrible. On the other hand, the quality on the Ipod itself was great. Viewed on the PC, don't change the window size from anything other than what it was converted to or intended for or you'll be greatly disappointed again. The video loses it's integrity very quickly.
I started by recording at the highest setting onto a hard drive, thinking I could burn a DVD. . .big mistake. Terrible picture. I then sent the video to my 3rd generation nano, plugging that into my tv with the available adapters from Apple. . .still horrible. The adapter allowed for component input to the tv. Tried the s-video input to the tv to see if it might help improve some of the trails and it did to some extent, but the picture was still terrible. By the way, if you own a 5th generation Ipod, don't bother using the highest setting. It's not supported.
If you're planning on making clips available online or just using it to view movies on your Ipod, you won't be disappointed. If your expectations are any great than that, don't waste the money.
Missing info March 5, 2010 Momus (Colorado) I've downloaded and read the Pinnacle "manual".
It says that the quality of the recording depends
on the speed of the video stick. Fine, BUT they don't
specify what should that min speed be for the Best quality?!
Of course if they did, the next problem will be to find
what is a speed of your memory stick...
Amazon doesn't bother to specify these either. e.g:
Kingston DataTraveler 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DT100/8GB
Amazon's "Technical Details" don't give the speed, just some junk like:
",With True Enhanced Performance", "Latest Technical Development", etc...
-Meaningless garbage phrases...!!
Also note that there is NO video editing software boxed with this device. Nothing, not even to trim or to split the videos. Pinnacle is apparently aiming for the gutter with this.
Even VuPoint which first made this device (VuPoint DVC-ST100B-VP-BX4 Digital Video Converter) comes with editing software. The price is also lower. But both companies are so bad with giving the specs, that it's impossible to compare the devices.
ps. Rated it 3star, because this review system requires a rating.
So this should not change much the average.
Format issues December 24, 2008 Victor Liberi 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Be aware of format issues! The unit recognized my inputs quite fine (VCR, DVR). I had significant problems getting the unit to recognize and accept my output devices (previous generation IPOD, 2 external hard drives, PC & Mac). The device will only export to a FAT32 format. I was not willing (or able) to reformat my IPOD and my external hard drives would need to be erased to reformat. Therefore, you must be wiling to reformat any storage device you already have or buy a device that you are able to format correctly (more money). I would recommend the latter. I had no problem with an existing cruzer mini flash drive, but it was not large enough to suit my needs.
If you are looking to digitize small clips, or half hour shows, this might work for you. If you are looking for versitility (teachers, media wizzes) not a capable product. I think if you are looking to convert all of the old VHS tapes to DVD, buy a stand alone unit for an extra $150 and save a lot of headaches.
A few more things: tech support - horrible
Certainly not "PRESS AND GO"
It does what it says it does but pooly January 14, 2009 Daniel Orr (Great Mills, md United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This product works as advertised to a point. They say that it delivers a high quality video but it really doesn't. I sent it back and bought the dazzle device to go from my VCR to my video card and it works much better. I guess the problem is that this product doesn't give you an end result that is of the quality you need to do movie authoring.
Easy to use, but poor video quality July 30, 2008 Brooklynite (Brooklyn, NY USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
While I was surprised at the ease of use of this device, I was disappointing at the poor quality of the video it produces.
This is a well designed device that does exactly as it promises: transfers analog video to digital with a simple click.
Now, here you have the disappointing parts:
- The resulting video is very pixelated, even in "highest quality" mode. No better than what you'll find in youtube.
- It doesn't resolve interlaced video properly, producing even more noise in the resulting video.
- It does work well with hard drives and flash devices, but had a hard time having it transfer video to a computer. It only seemed to work with an external storage device.
In the end I found the video quality poor for archiving.
This device is well designed and may work well for people that just want to capture old VHS tapes to digital so they can put them online. And to do it quickly and painlessly.
If you wish to capture your memories in good quality, this product is not for you.
