5 out of 5 stars aged former Palm advocate tries iPod Touch   December 24, 2009

Well over the last decade my 2 adult children went into iPod then iPhone and I've been happy with my Palm Tx and its predecessors and could access the Internet via WiFi, read eBooks and audioBooks, view my photo album, keep my calendar, "to do's", and contact list up to date, listen to music, write little notes to give my memory a 'crutch' - - - I had a GREAT little pocket device that went with me everywhere. Last year My kids talked with me about joining them on a family plan for iPhone cell phone, but I'm thinking about monthly cost, being retired. But I don't want to be the old fuddy-duddy to my kids; I'd like to be "up" on this technology. After reading and looking around for a year, I decided to try the Apple iPod Touch 32Gb, with no monthly charge or cell phone, but most everything else that the iPhone has. I bought it, tested it out, learned how to use it (I'm still learning new options, like reading my daily newspaper on my iPod) and I love this little guy. It is so small and light that I carry it in my shirt pocket (my old Palm goes on a belt holster) and it seems to do sooo much, I hardly use my laptop any more. I went an bought a Verizon MiFi for occasional Internet signal if I'm away from my home WiFi, and it works like a charm (also works fine at any hotspot locations like Starbucks. The sound on it is incredible and it even had a microphone so you can talk, record, and even do voice commands. There are so many apps, short little one purpose programs, that work great and tailor the iPod Touch to your needs and interests. The video quality is excellent, and the workings of the divice are so user friendly and reliable that it seems like I created this little device myself. So for someone thinking about buying one, it is: small, light, functional, adaptable, simple, well engineered, and fun/educational. It even has connections for the social sites like Facebook and others. I'v had computers since the early 1980's from TI and Commadore, learned early DOS and did my own repairs/upgrades, went on the internet before it was public, and tried to keep up to date on technology. I hope this review helps someone in some way. Thank you if you read this far. The End.Apple iPod touch 32 GB (3rd Generation) NEWEST MODEL

5 out of 5 stars Best buy in a long time   December 3, 2009

I bought this to use as an alternative to my Creative Labs Zen MicroPhoto (which I still use at the gym because it can take a beating, but the battery life is terrible).

This thing was designed beautifully. Very thin, but solid feeling. Touch screen is very responsive and has excellent brightness and colors. The sound quality rivals that of my previous mp3 player.

Being new to the whole ipod thing, it took a few days to accept that itunes would take control of my itouch (i.e. syncing stuff). Sure, there is an option to manually add and delete stuff, but once I got used to it, the auto sync isn't that bad.

Being able to connect to wireless networks is a very cool bonus with this thing. Adding email accounts is easy, page load time is acceptable. Oh, and the best part: it doubles as a portable gaming console (watch out though, prolonged use will drain battery pretty quick).

Overall battery life is great. I usually leave it in sleep mode so I don't lose my place on whatever music I'm listening too. Going on 4 days now without a recharge... and I use it for music on average 3 hours per day.

Mirrored backplate is cool... allows for one to covertly check to ensure that there is no crap on his or her teeth.

So what's not so good about this thing?--

1) Can't delete music files on the fly: i.e. you need to delete files while connected to itunes.

2) no integrated microphone (there is one built into the headphones, but I'd rather forfeit this feature in favor of using better headphones).

3) apps are addictive... watch the spending and read reviews before buying games.

4) now I kind of want an iphone... but don't want to use at&t service... oh well.

Hey,
I know that there are a ton of reviews on this thing. This one is for the non techy AARP's. I've had my Touch for a month now. I bought it to replace a Dell pocket PC that I used for my GPS and to carry around some medical programs I use at work. The touch opened a whole new world of podcasts to me. It does all the stuff I need at work, but in addition when I'm in the car I can play podcasts instead of using the radio. The interface with i tunes on my PC is very easy. I also enjoy carrying around all the photos that are on my computer that have been magically transfered to the touch. I can show off my grand chidren to an ever widening audience. I can't get and Iphone for a bunch of reasons and this thing hooks up to wifi hotspots easily. It has issues with my home wireless, but that is moot since I see now reason to use it in that mode at home. Finally, I've dropped it a couple of times and it is none the worse for the trauma. Don't let the $300 pricetag deter you. This thing is worth its weight in gold. Roger.

5 out of 5 stars 2nd iPod--Former iPod Classic User   October 13, 2009

I've been keeping up with all the reviews posted here since the 3rd generation was released. I've read them all, and quite a few have done a lovely job describing the specs, technology, etc. They've put it into better words than I can muster, so I will focus my review on my experience instead.

I'm a 20 year old college student, and I'm not a very big spender. This is my first investment in a single item so expensive, and I'm very satisfied about my decision. I've had an iPod classic 60gb for almost four years now. Both my parents have the 120gb classic, so I've seen how the classic has been improved since my own. Even though the newer classic models have the capacity to hold an insane amount of songs--I thought 15,000 was an insane amount four years ago--, I really wanted to get an iPod touch because of the newer technology it offered. However, I did not want to sacrifice so much storage space when, even with an older iPod classic, I could hold far more songs than a 2nd generation 32gb touch. So, I was absolutely ecstatic when I heard they were going to be releasing a new 64gb touch and did not hesitate to purchase it. It holds just about the same amount of songs as my 60gb classic, but even though I did not progress in the amount of storage space, I love the addition of Wi-fi, apps, and other cool aspects the classic or nano does not offer.

I've noted that the majority of negative reviews complained about no camera installment and no vast updates from the 2nd generation. While this is true, I personally do not believe updating the same type of iPod so quickly is such a wise move (unless there was something wrong with the older iPod). I mean, the 2nd generation is still pretty new--why would you want to get a new one with the same capacity after only one year? Yes, it would have been nice if they installed a camera or a radio or a GPS, but I hope the 2nd generation users were aware that this was not the case before purchasing the new generation touch.

As for me, my iPod has been through a lot, and I'm glad it's still cooperating with me. I will continue to use my classic, but I've been spoiling my new touch since it arrived. I am not a camera person, so a lack thereof does not bother me. Also, since I've never owned a 1st or 2nd generation touch, the 3rd generation is completely new to me and, quite frankly, I'm having a blast messing around with it.

So what it comes down to is this--if you already have a 2nd generation touch, do not upgrade if it's still a perfectly functioning iPod unless you want the new 64gb storage space. If you're a nano or classic user like me and are considering purchasing your first touch, I highly recommend. It was delivered on-time and in perfect condition, and I've had no problems whatsoever. However, if you're anything like me, beware--buying this may cause you to procrastinate completing your work and assignments. ;)

So, like everyone else, I was hoping for a camera. didn't even want a camcorder, just a still camera, but alas it was not to be. Then had to debate whether or not to go ahead and get the touch anyway or not. After
Amazon dropped the price $20, decided to go ahead and get it.

This thing is amazing. I still can't believe all the things it can do. I have never had a device with a touch screen before, so maybe I'm easily impressed. One of the big selling points for me for this was the app store. Didn't need a smart phone (and didn't want to be pay for more than the basic monthly fees for phone service) so that ruled out the iphone. When you hear in the commercial "we have an app for that", it doesn't seem to be that far from the truth. Truly makes the touch a multipurpose too. There are several apps I can use at work as well as home.

Of course it has all my music and podcasts on as well. I've downloaded a number of free games for my kids to play, and the fact that this thing has wifi for internet surfing is a major plus as well. Especially like that I can find directions on Google maps, and it will save my them (at least for last search) even when I'm offline. Should make finding my son's away football games much easier.

All in all, very pleased with the Touch.
