Unforgivable April 7, 2010 B. pentecost 11 out of 18 found this review helpful
1.) The story was flat, nonsensical, and riddled with horrendous dialogue half drowned out by obnoxious, overloud background music. Story elements are disjointed, vague, and scattered. Random things periodically happen for no reason at all.
2.) Paradigms severely limit one's control over battle flow and strategy. There's pretty much only one way to do any given battle and if you deviate, you're punished.
3.) The stagger gauge would be a great idea if it didn't count down during paradigm switches and paradigm-switch animations which are unavoidable. Speaking of which...
4.) During paradigm switches and paradigm-switch animations, you're still taking damage from enemies. It only takes a few seconds to choose and switch paradigms, but a few seconds is a big deal in a game where even common enemies can do away with a third of your health in one hit and stagger-gauges count down really quickly.
5.) If the party leader dies, it's game over. There are one-hit kills and attacks that wipe out 90% of your health.
6.) You can only control the leader and the other two characters are controlled by deeply stupid AI that almost never takes the prudent course.
7.) Summons are just a hair short of totally pointless. You can only use one summon per character and can only summon once per battle. They don't do much damage and you can't switch them out for a summon that better fits the situation. Their only upside is that they resurrect and heal you before leaving.
8.) Tech points are rewarded based on speed of winning battles. This would be fine if you weren't only allowed 5 tps in a game where battles are designed to be overlong.
9.) The Crystarium is badly designed and unrewarding in the extreme. You have to fight 6-9 enemies on on average before you can advance just ONE notch on the crystarium and it has no discernible effect. You can crank your magic or strength up 100pts and it doesn't seem to make a difference in how quickly enemies fall.
10.) Upgrading weapons and accessories requires a lot of money-wasting, guesswork, and staring at walls of text on gamefaqs.
11.) "Moms are tough." This has to be about the stupidest single line of dialogue I think I have ever heard and it's repeated no less than THREE times. Then the dumb b**** just lets herself die which is a damned shame because she was cute and I wanted to see more of that interesting outfit she was wearing.
12.) Marks will very often turn up 20 ZILLION miles away and there's no speed travel system aside from a few sparse teleporters and chocobos. 50+ hrs of gameplay is not something to tout when the majority of it is spent jogging towards a mark on the other side of a million mile map!
I could just keep going and going and going. There are AT LEAST 20 other reasons I hated FF13. But the worst thing of all, when it was over, I was RELIEVED! Every other FF game I have played left me sad that it was over, left me wanting more, left me wanting to play it again! Not this time. I was deeply relieved when I saw "the end." What a horrible piece of trash "game."

Final Fantasy 13, not so good. April 15, 2010 Michael E. Robbins (North Canton, Ohio) 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
I've a been a FF fan on the decline. FF 2 and 3, and 7 were my fav games. After those, everything has gone down hill. This game will be the last I buy before playing. Graphics are good for cinemas, but roaming around is nothing special, I think uncharted 2 has much better grahpics even though it is running at 720 instead of 1080p. Terrible story!!!! No real end gaem villian---that old guy you fight has no background story, he is just there to fill in as a villian. Sounds are nothing spectacular! And whats with mixing robots/technology with monsters? ick! And remember back when you could use call monsters? Well, no you hardly use them at all! The summons I only used mayb 6 times, and it was all odin. Bad bad bad story! I think Dragon age of origins, which has poorer graphics, totalyl smashed this FF game! At least dragon age had story and depth, not some crap about fal cie and cieth and blah blah trying to fulfull your mark, this was just bad writing. I think they square was attempting to ride a game using only good graphics but it is not worth 60 bucks. 20 yeah. Save your time and play other RPG's out there, this was a sad game in the series in my opinion. I sure hope they make a bettter RPG next time using REAL armour and weapon selections, not this CRAP about finding parts and having to figure out how to upgrade them and crap. I want an assortment of weapons and items to search for and learn about, not "upgrade" the same items through the game. And the gaem doesn't even tell you what your upgrade will have an effect upon until afte ryou used it, so you have to go back and reload your game if you dont' like it. bah! THIS game is definetly a ONE time play through. NO replay VALUE whatsoever......
I want an RPG like FF 2 or 3 using the PS3 mechanics, just delivery a story with breathtaking scenes and depth and character development, why is that so hard????
Terrible - waste of time May 1, 2010 E. Earley 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
Pros:
pretty. Combat system has promise.
Cons:
No exploration. Characters are irritating, cliche, shallow, and poorly voice-acted. Writing is abysmal. I would have felt closer to the characters if they were mute. The "level designer" must have been a sedated 1 year old baboon. Mostly terrible music.
an example game quote:
"When I couldn't see a future and I was afraid. When the future was clear and it hurt to see, I just close my eyes and lose myself in happier days."
The story makes no sense, and I don't think this is an East-West cultural difference.
Conclusion:
If you like watching computer animated characters fail to look bad-ass while making orgasm and constipation grunts for 50+ hours, you'll love this game.
Seriously, Japan, wtf?
So boring i almost cried once May 11, 2010 J. Ashley (Doha, Qatar) 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
I dont know where to start with this game. I thought the other ff games were ok but everyone was talking about this one like it was going to be the best and really i was looking forward to it and even the first couple hours where ok but after that the story moves so slow it will drive you crazy...all you do is run on a path a fight boring battle after boring battle to get to a new path were you do the same thing... there are a lot if people writing saying it opens up later in the game and really that is what kept me going but it never did...i am 65 hours into this game and looking so forward when it is all over...i truly feel like i have wasted every hour i have played it... i say i feel asleep about 25% of the time i played the game because of its boredom...
i wish there was something good about the game that i could say...i guess it does look pretty good but i wouldnt say it looks any better then any of the bigger name ps3 games out there...
im sorry to say it but if a ff game comes out after this one i am not going to waste my time again
Horrible April 18, 2010 Paul Durham (Scottsdale, AZ USA) 7 out of 12 found this review helpful
Auto battle is a bore. I mean if everything is auto why even make me push the button?
Linear game play is painful.
pointless items
pointless upgrades
pointless skills
pointless game
The plot is so boring and it repeats itself in every cut seen so many times I couldn't take it any more.
Truly a horrible game. Pretty graphics to not make up for the lack of fun.
An utter utter disappointment.
