good but not essential April 14, 2010 S. Alessandro (Tavernerio, Como Italy) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is not a bad record, for sure, but listening to it I feel something strange compared to the other Rubin's sessions: it seems like each track has been taken from different sessions (also Cash's voice has different strength in some songs) and the whole work sounds "disjointed". Good but not essential.
The Man in Black speaks from beyond the grave February 23, 2010 William Merrill (San Antonio, TX United States) 16 out of 27 found this review helpful
This new Cash album is a short but fitting epilogue to his story, although it seems likely that there will be more posthumous releases to come, judging from what's already been put out in the years since his passing. There's barely half an hour of music on Ain't No Grave, but the collection of songs hangs together well around the theme of looking back at a life well lived, and readying oneself for what comes next. The packaging is well designed too, with the similing young Johnny on the cover, and a ghostly image on back of the elder Cash at a window. As far as the music itself, I will tip my hat to an excellent Calgary Herald review of the album, where it is pointed out that Cash's vocals are shakier than ever on this final recording. It's perfectly understandable given his condition when the recordings were made, but I still found it distracting in many places, and it did reduce my enjoyment of the songs somewhat. On some tunes, such as "Satisfied Mind," he sounds good and relatively strong, but on others he seemed to just barely have enough breath to get the words out. It's not just the weak and ragged tone on many songs that bothered me, but also the frequently slurred diction. I respect those who can love Johnny's singing no matter how diminished it might be, but I can't quite go that far.
I was also frustrated by the lack on information about how this album was made. The booklet gives us samples of Johnny's handwritten notes and song lyrics for "I Corinthians 15:55," the one original song on the CD that he wrote. That's interesting, but I would also like to know how these recordings were assembled. For example, I assume Cash's vocals were recorded separately and all the instruments were all added long afterwards, but is that what happened? Maybe this is one of those sausage-making situations, but I do want to know what went into the creation of Ain't No Grave.
"Hospice Tapes" September 5, 2010 Dr. B I ordered this because of a review in the local paper that called them the "hospice tapes," and I am interested in what our reflections are when we are aware that we are nearing the end of our lives. What I found was that Cash was looking more "forward" than back, and doing so in ways that were less uniquely insightful than tradition-affirming. Perhaps the picture on the cover says it all: When he was facing death Cash drew on songs and images taught to him as a child-- so this maybe a childhood-influenced look around during this time in his life. No less interesting for that, but not as inspiring as I had hoped it would be.

But this album was a mjor let-down. The title track is good, but this is by far inferior to the previous 5 American recordings. I think Ruben just slapped together the throw-aways for this one. I LOVE J. Cash and his legacy speaks for itself. However, this album was a waste of money. 2 stars.
One Too Many April 2, 2010 BigH 3 out of 13 found this review helpful
This just didn't do it for me. I'm a big Cash fan, and love all the Rick Rubin produced sessions, but this one is just dull. In fact, I've already put it in permanent storage. I have no specific criticism, it's just lackluster and left me with an "oh, well" reaction. I wish they had left wll enough alone.
